'Unlike other "piggyback" solutions', implying that this is also a piggyback. And looking at the other details, it looks like it plugs inbetween the ECU and the sensors, modifying the sensor input to fool the ECU, which is, by definition, a piggyback.

And this clinches it, yes, it is a piggyback, for better or worse:
