All engines fee up after a a few thousand (actually nn hours) of use. Mainly a case of the rings fully settling in the cylinder bores which reduces friction.
Modern engines don't have as significant a difference as in the past but it still happens and could be worth 1 or even 2 mpg depending on circumstances
