Getting Genie intellicode to work

I struggled with my genie intellicode remote, which is the really small one (see attached pic or http://www.amazon.com/Genie-GMI-3BL-...f=pd_rhf_p_t_1)
It would train at 1 inch away, but based on the code learned from the remote, homelink never was able to complete training via the receiver unit.

After many tries following the instructions exactly and repeatedly failing with it, I finally found an older, larger remote, and that one worked the first time around: 1. train 1 inch from homelink; 2. get on the ladder and press the train button on the receiver, and 3. press homelink button a couple of times.

Anyone else trying to train with a really small intellicode may want to find a bigger one to train with. Hope this helps some people out.
