The BMW Harman Kardon system actually has 14 speakers, 2 underseat subwoofers and a trunk mounted amplifier. It’s extremely difficult and expensive to try to upgrade from a BMW HiFi to a BMW HK audio system. The HK uses a fiber optic cabling system between the head unit in the dash and the amplifier in the trunk.
Upgrading to an HK would be foolish because the HK has a 10+ year old DSP system. That is ancient in the tech world. It would be like upgrading an iPhone to a Blackberry. Best upgrade for a BMW HiFi system is the Match 7BMW amplifier that has a modern DSP system. Plenty of posts exist on this.
