Yes, the in-park overnight sites are ridiculously difficult.

However, there are alternatives. For example, we rented a luxury RV in SLC last year, and hit the "UTAH 5" over the course of a week. The only reservations we needed were at the RV parks (easy), and for the best hikes like Angel's Landing & Fiery Furnace. Our Fiery Furnace Permit allowed us to skip the timed entry at Arches.
