If you have 2020 and perhaps 2021, Video in Motion unlock for the front screen is possible with Bimmercode.

Sure (I have a 2020 with ViM unlocked), but I was curious with rear seat entertainment system as standard - surely BMW didn't unlock ViM from factory for these systems so how were they expected to work without coding.

The rear screens are of course unlocked to work in motion from the factory. That’s their purpose. Rear screens can be totally independent between themselves and with the front. All three screens can also choose what source they want to watch independently or combined. Think of it as three completely independent entertainment systems that can be synced. The Blu-ray player is in the rear center console by the rear climate control as well as the HDMI inputs. The GPS systems in the rear are also independent with each other and the vehicle, but can send locations to the front master navigation system.
