I went for 21” non-RF. Where I live (NYC area), the roads are pretty bad. I have a 7 series (got it 18 months ago) and have gone through 6-7 tires so far at $500 a pop (thankfully I got a tire package). My 7 has 245/45R19 RF tires meaning tire wall is 110mm high. The 21” option on X7 has 285/45 R21 which is 128.5mm of tire wall. I had a RR that was 255/55 R20 (140mm tire wall) which didn’t have any problems.
So, I knew 140mm (RR) was good and 110mm (7 ser) was bad but didn’t know if 128.5mm (X7) was good enough esp in RF. So I chose non-RF with a spare. On RF vs non, I had a Maserati QP before the 7 with same tire size as the 7 but non-RF. I didn’t have a single issue through 36000 miles of driving in the NYC area. I did put on same-sized snows in the winter though (the car came with summer tires). Same wheels as the summer just mounted/ dismounted winter/summer tires twice a year. Forgot one thing. Friend of mine has had a number of X5s running 255/50 R19 (127.5mm tire wall) in run flats. He has been OK driving in NYC area. I guess I just didn’t want the RFs after my 7 series experience.

I got performance run flat tires Continental Premiumcontact 6 SSR 22" on 755M on my X7 and it's still feel smooth and no road noise unlike Pirelli P Zero Run Flat 20" that came with 750i

The Bridgestone 21s either Rf or non rd are around 270 each. The continental 21s are 454 each from tire rack! I'll be getting Bridgestone when my continentals wear out! Prices per tire rack. |

I felt exactly the same way. By the way, you do pay extra for 22” wheels even on the m sport. I got the m-sport with standard Msport 21’s. No way I want to spend $2000 every 10-12,000 miles (that was the consensus expected lifetime of these tires in another thread) Maybe the price will come down, but I was pretty happy with the 21s and I too added the spare in case i ever want to go with non-runflats. Also, those 22” performance tires should not be used when temps get into the mid 40”s and lower. There’s a huge drop off in how they perform at that temp. A lot of ppl buy an extra set of 21” wheels to use in the cooler months. UGAdawg - are you in Athens? |

Great choice on the 22's. I have the same on mine and it came with the Pirelli run flat summer tires. We're not able to choose which tires they come with here in the US but the only other option is Continental. Not sure if it's a supply thing which determines if you get Pirelli or Conti but both are comparable. Do you get to choose in Canada? Is that why you're asking?

Forgive me, your first post stated that you already choose the 755m 22" wheels and the deal came with those wheels with run flats included. Here in US those wheels are a $1300 upgrade from a standard Msport 21" wheel. So are you 2nd guessing your decision and asking the group their opinion on tires in general? What options do you have?

Yes, 22" is a free upgrade in Canada if you purchase M Sport. Actually, you can get certain 22" wheels standard even without M Sport. I've attached the Canadian pricing guide here in case you're interested. |

22s are a commitment. In the end, I prefer winters to all seasons for Nov - March, so since I'll be swapping out for that and already going through that trouble, having 22s for April - Oct isn't too much more of an inconvenience.
It's a pain in the a&& no matter how you cut it tho |

I have the 21” m-sport wheels with conti RF. Would anyone consider downsizing to 20s for winter tires with a separate rim? It looks like there are many more options on Tire Rack for that size (of course trying to get as close as possible in overall diameter to the original 21 combo)

1. You can stick at 21" with a square set up of 285/45R21, or 2. Down size to 20" with 285/50R20 all around - you'll have more tire options at this size.

Totally agree. I’m shocked that I’ve never once found the ride harsh, even in sport. I don’t exactly go looking for pot holes tho, which I’m sure contributes at least a bit to my satisfaction with the ride

Good to hear the 22s are performing well. The 21s on my X5M are great on smooth pavement. On rough roads it's brutal and last year I had to replace 2 tires due to pot holes that I couldn't see in the soucal rain we had this winter. The side walls in the X5M were less than the 21s on the X7. All the same I don't believe the 22s sport tires provide any additional improved handling in our giant SUV. They look a little cooler. However, the 21s will always absorb the bumps better than a 22 and provide a better ride on less smooth streets. The air suspension is amazing I agree.
