Have to agree with that. Not just an "Individual" with different paint color or leather. Actual different hardware and vehicle frame. Talking huge production difference.

I wonder what the cost would be for BMW to offer a version without sunroof. My guess is that it would be prohibitively expensive, and that there is no profitability in it for them to offer it. A sunroof delete is not like the Individual paint or trim options, which can be easily accommodated during the assembly process as previously alluded to.
Plus, if someone isn't going to order the X7 solely because of the inability to not order one with a sunroof, where would they take their order? Really no incentive for BMW to offer the choice. If someone really wants a sunroof delete, just order the standard car, remove the sun roofs, and have a fabricator build a piece to cover the openings. Paint and blend to match. Keep the existing headliner and interior panels, and just glue them into place.

Same goes for X3. The X7 needs that extra light

When open, does the sunroof stick up or mostly lay flat?

I used to hate sunroof for the same reason (heat, noise, cost), but the last few cars, I've had the sunroof tinted with 5% (limo dark) ceramic tint and heat & noise are no longer an issue. My kids and any back seat passenger really love the open feeling of the sunroof.
My wife still does not like sunroof so we had to custom order her X3 without it. |
