Driving modes
Still counting down the days until I pick up the new F30 and wondering if I'll use anything other than sport mode....
What does everyone find they use?

Sorry but the drive select is not great! Waste of time imo. Both sport modes reduce the amount control over the throttle, and sport steering just makes it heavier, it doesn't give any better feel!
Gear stick to left is all you need, or also turn DTC on if you want more fun! Or turn DSC off if you want even more fun, & a squeaky bum! |

I know others will rag but I like using eco pro
but that's because I am mostly in town driving, even a 316i in sport in town is too "jerky", Sport should only be used if roads are clear, not stop / start, busy roads |

I like sport, it changes the steering weight and seems much better with the ACS springs fitted.
I also like the gear in the left position, a combination of both is excellent. Mostly though, wife who is excellent at back seat driving, I drive in normal and D. |

Sport + left seems to be the popular choice then..Do you use the paddleshift as much as you thought you might or not?
Although driving styles will be naturally effected when in sport, is there much difference in fuel consumption in the eco vs sport?

You see, one thing I liked about the 316i (I have driven a 335i)
Is, I like revving the crap out of it As Jeremy Clarkson (and someone before him) said; The fastest car is a rental car You can't really go full throttle/relining a 335i all the time / at road legal speeds Whereas in my baby I revved the F out of it, and used all 134 ponies when possible |

Prefer sport but use comfort round town. When feeling brave use sport +. Rarely use Eco pro don't find it saves that much fuel and just don't feel right.
Stopped using sport all the time when BMW took stop start off sport mode. |

I also don't like the fact it doesn't use 8th gear in sport even at motorway speeds.

I burble around in normal mode for the majority of the time. If I'm on a commute in heavy traffic and approaching intersections and lane changing areas, I sometimes switch briefly to 'sport' just to give me a bit more instant squirtability (if you know what I mean), so that I can occupy a part of the road that it is clear and need to be on. During commutes it can all get a bit competitive, as well as dealing with the moronic mindless and the discourteous inconsiderates. If you chill out too much, you'll just end up getting bullied and cut-up all the time. Sorry, you were asking about driving modes and I seem to have gone off on one!?

You will find depending on your mood, road conditions and as stated above junctions and intersections where you will nudge the selector left and have the response if you wish to move swiftly to get into traffic or at overtaking points. All in all, the options and flexibility make the car a great fun all rounder. Even in comfort the 335d will shift it's paraffin burning butt when you ask it to.

My personal 'default' setting (a bit different in the 5-series) is normal (mid) suspension setting and 'D' for the gearbox. When I use Sport mode (suspension/steering) I leave the drivetrain unchecked, so run in 'D'. I use Sport+ when I'm in the mood, and/or conditions for a real drive, then use the paddles or shifter. Personally I don't see the need to run the gearbox in Sport mode or M/S for normal driving, but do flick the shifter to M/S when I want the fastest overtake, then back to D. The modes in the Five gives three distinct chassis responses, all appropriate for my driving conditions. Best of all worlds. HighlandPete |

You don't need full throttle in a 335d that often. For overtaking .............. And keeping up with Golf R's

I prefer sport steering so have sport mode selected to chassis only, and have this on most of the time.
I use sport+ when driving more spiritedly, not because it's faster per se but because I prefer the throttle response. I only tend to push gearstick to left when I want to choose gears myself. I do play around a bit with them though, and would love the car to go up to 8th is sport drivetrain when on steady cruise.

I used to drive to work in Eco Pro mode and home in Sport! Seemed a nice outlook and always had me home in a good mood
Life's a bit more complex right now. I've been experimenting with different configurations of the M Buttons. Currently setup as: M1: - Throttle: Efficient - Suspension: Comfort - Steering: Sport Plus - Transmission: D1 - DSC: On - HUD: Standard M2: - Throttle: Sport Plus - Suspension: Sport - Steering: Sport Plus - Transmission: S2 - DSC: MDM - HUD: M View

And if you've got a sweet petrol engine then it's an absolute pleasure of motoring.

I find I'm in comfort 90% of the time just use sport for harder driving, with the adaptive suspension it really firms that up too so it's really flat in corners - I haven't experimented yet setting sport to just change the drivetrain, if I did I might use sport more often as the suspension is pretty good in comfort and being adaptive it seems to firm up at speed and in corners anyway. |
