odd sound in the rear

I have a 2020 x7 M50i. On occasion it makes an odd sound from the rear, possibly the rear differential. It sounds like it is slipping. This only happens when starting from stand still. It lasts for 1-2 seconds at most. I have an appt at the dealership next week but it only occasionally happens and it probably will not repeat itself there. What do you think?

You sure it's not suspension noise? That seems to be a somewhat prevelant complaint. Does this only happen under acceleration?

It’s not the auto brake-hold function disengaging from a stop?

Yes, only under acceleration, from full stop. Both possible.

The dealership said the problem is caused by the transfer case fluid which is at the end of its life. I have the platinum extended warrantee and then said this will not cover the fluid change. The estimate they gave for the transfer case fluid change is $823.00. what do you think?

Have you looked at reputable independent shops that work with German cars at your location? You probably don’t need to go to the dealer for that service is out of warranty.

I was curious if the noise was there while turning or just when accelerating? While doing sharp turns at low speeds, I feel slight thump/grind feeling in the back. I thought it was the transfer case fluid and the related TSB (warranty) but they blamed it on low tire tread.

Thanks

They noticed it on slow speed cornering through the parking lot. They will replace the transfer case fluid for a fee and if the car still has this symptom after 250 miles, they will replace the tran case under platinum warrantee. I was told if I don't replace the fluid at my cost, and the case has to be changed I will not be covered under the warrantee .

I had the same issue a couple of months ago. In my case, I wasn’t asked to pay for the fluid change because they were almost 100% certain the transfer case was bad. They changed the fluid, drove it for 125 miles and then replaced the transfer case. I was also under the platinum extended warranty through bmw. I had 55k miles. No problems since.

I’ve noted a few transfer case issues on the forum; seems to be a common issue. I also recall a few saying they needed to do the fluid first, then the case (as well as a number saying they did the fluid and it seemed to be fine after). Based on what I’ve read, I see the rational for requiring the flush first.

I have a ‘23 and will be monitoring for this as it gets on in miles.

Following this closely as I’m beginning to feel/hear the same symptoms in my ‘22 XB7 with around 32K miles.

That is outrageously expensive for what is surely less than an hour of work.

Also, what is your mileage? End of fluid life sounds crazy to me unless you very high.

I am probably missing something, but $823.00 for a fluid change seems extremely high! It would seem reasonable if the decimal was moved one place to the left. I think looking for a non-dealer shop is good advice.

That sounds really high. Ask them for a break down of the price. Labor and Material. I would also call another dealer and ask what they would charge.

If you pay for the fluid change, it does not solve the issue, and they have to replace the TC, I would expect to be refunded the price of the fluid change.

I know it's difficult to describe sound but can someone describe what it sounds/feels like when you have rear transfer case issue?

My issue is only there when I am turning but it's not all the time. Feels like the rear tire is skipping with a slight thump (not loud) as the car turns. No noise while going straight.

Mine is similar to what you’re describing, but also when I’m going straight and coming to a stop, just before the car comes to a halt I feel a shudder in the driveline.

I am no expert, but if the sound only occurs while turning, I would suspect a differential and not the transfer case. Perhaps others may add a diagnosis.

The shop could only get the shudder, slip feel when driving slowly and turning in their parking lot. They said if I did not replace the fluid at my own expense and it was later determined that the transfer case had to be changed, then I would be responsible for that cost. The warrantee would not pay. My car has 42,000 miles. I also asked about taking it to another shop or doing the fluid change myself. They said without a record of the fluid change by a BMW dealership they would not know if it was done properly. Catch 22.
Picked the car up yesterday, they said to drive it 300 miles and if it still was symptomatic they would change the case.

I am not sure if it is State specific, but in Florida, they have to honor a properly documented non-dealer service and I believe that includes doing it yourself. Don't take my word for it, but you might want to explore the rules where you are located. Someone on the forum may also be more familiar with the rules.

Trying to keep this thread current as my transfer case is now being replaced under warranty.

2022 XB7
33K Miles

My advice to you all:

If you think you’re feeling odd vibrations and noises coming from the driveline; get it checked out. This has obviously become a glaring problem for the G07. I’m curious to know if it’s affecting the 40i trucks as much as their V8 counterparts.

I think BMW should have beefed up the transfer case internals on the V8 (750nm) and diesel (720nm) trucks. Especially given BMW typically underrates hp/tq numbers.
