IND | Painted Engine Cover Installation
Upon popping the hood of the F80 M3 you are immediately drawn to the intricacies of the S55 power plant. In a effort to bring a little more color into the bay we now offer a painted vanity cover. This piece is a OEM BMW part that is painted in-house at our 12,000 sqft. paint and body shop. Available in all standard F8X M3/M4 colors, we are also able to accommodate custom color/scheme requests. Below is an install of a motorsport themed S55 vanity cover.
STEP 1: After opening the hood the first step is to simply remove the oil cap. STEP 2: The S55 engine cover is held in place by 4 male tabs. These 4 tabs are secured to the cover via 4 rubber mounts already on the underside engine cover. After the oil cap is removed simply grasp the cover with one hand positioned on the front and the other on the rear. With light pressure pull the cover toward your body. Step 3: To install the new cover line up the 4 tabs and carefully apply pressure on the top of the engine cover. The tabs will click into place. Step 4: Install the oil cap.

We understand the concern regarding the price, but there is a substantial amount labor involved with these covers albeit not as much as the S65 plenum. First, all covers are completely sanded to remove the light texture present on the surface. The sanding ensures a perfectly smooth finish and not simply a paint fill. After sanding the cover the painter must mask every line and letter, which in itself can take 30-45 minutes. From there the cover is primed, base coat applied, tape removed, and finally the clear is sprayed. Although seemingly complete, all painted parts are then inspected for any imperfections in the clear, buffed, and packaged in microfiber to ensure safe delivery. I also think it looks great w/o the cover. I'm not gonna be popping my hood too much with this car just to show off what's underneath cause honestly there isn't a whole lot to marvel at. With my current car there is a lot more to look at in the engine bay. The sexiest modern sports car engine though, hands down is the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

My goal was not to market, but to simply create transparency with the labor involved. Regardless if you purchase the engine cover from us or have someone replicate our work, this is a DIY thread for anyone interested in removing the cover.

yeah, I agree this looks really sharp and will be a must for me eventually as other under-the-hood dress gets fabricated for the after-market, but the $500 seems steep. I do appreciate that there is labor involved with each individual order. If there was some form of credit with core exchange as others mentioned that would be a nice incentive to do sooner rather than later. I'm sure that there are other cost factors involved tho (shipping being the first one that comes to mind), so maybe that approach really isn't feasible depending on the margin already in play.
I think I'll be saving up a little bit in side money for a few months before thinking about pulling this particular trigger. It does look fantastic! Thanks for the post.

Good to hear! In a sense though, I feel like it is kind of failsafe. You charge people the full amount and send a label and then they return the part to you. If they don't get it back to you within a short, but reasonable amount of time, then they get some significant money back. If not, they bought yours and you already have the money. You'll also get shipping boxes back .
