PS4S in snow

I live in Southern California and on the 27th plan on going up to Big Bear. It snows up there and I was wondering if anyone has any experience/knowledge on taking their F80 up there or in snow in general. I have 666m wheels and by then will have brand new ps4s on them. This would most likely be my first and last time taking it up, and I will only be there for one day so I can't justify purchasing winter tires.

Would I be okay with chains or cables and driving extremely careful or should I look to find an alternative vehicle there? I do want to take the m3 as I want pictures in the snow but I won't risk it if its a dumb idea. I have driven in snow up there but it was in an AWD vehicle. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I would say it's a bad idea. These tires just don't grip when they're cold. I don't know if they would even make a tire chain to go around a sidewall so slim...I'm a bit ignorant there. You can't drive carefully enough when you can't stop the car.

I hope you like ice skating. Because that's how it's gonna feel trying to drive on cold roads with possible snow with PS4S. You can post a picture of your car in a ditch off the road afterwards.

M3s handle snow just fine when equipped with snow tires.

If all you'll see is cold weather, you are fine as is if you drive carefully. For snow however, I understand you don't want to get snow tires just for one time. I suggest you get a set of 'cloth chains', that you can fit over your stock wheels/tires and provide lots of snow grip.

I drive my F80 year round in Pittsburgh. I would never drive my UHP summer tires near or below freezing.

If you can’t get proper tires, get a rental car and carry chains.

95% chance you'll end up in a wreck/ditch with summer tires on any kind of winter weather on the ground.

Video I saw from last year of cars sliding around a road in Big Bear. Snow isn’t even that bad. Granted most of those cars were driving too fast for conditions and a lot of the drivers had no clue in how to control their cars on snow.

if there is actual snow or ice patches you will lose control. The tire slides around enough just in low temperatures, let alone precipitation, especially snow. It will feel as if you are driving on the wheels

As has been repeated - definitely no on the summer tires in snow. I would just rent something else (maybe Turo for something fun?).

No they don’t. I have the cold weather package 18 inch 640m bmw wheels with brand new Michelin snow tires and it still handles like ass in the snow.

I've driven rwd bmws living in NH, through blizzards in Canada etc and haven't had issues. Basically, what instrumented testing shows.

I'd prefer to have an m3 with snow tires than the x3 and with performance all seasons. I run winter tires on both anyway.

There is nothing about an m3 that makes it 'handle like ass' in snow

PS4S and snow shouldn't even be in the same sentence. I keep mine on for too long and mount my winter setup only when it starts snowing, I've driven on them in very cold temps and once or twice got caught with minimal dusting on the ground and I'll tell you it's a very bad idea. They are nothing like your typical all season tire once the temps drop and turn into skates with any snow on the ground.

Ever watch a cop chase with the idiot trying to drive on bare wheels because the tires got shot out?

I live in Yonkers NY. Let me tell you any rwd car snow tires or not it will be complete dog shit. It’s all hills. But they do handle terrible regardless flat streets or hills. I could barely back out of my driveway with them. My fwd Honda on the other hand with 19 inch snow tires is better than most cars and I never get stuck on hills or anything at all.

Your experience doesn't match up with the experience of tire rack for example. But we can agree to disagree.

When you take a corner or brake, the tires can't distinguish a rwd m3 from a fwd Honda and perform the same. That's most of what we call 'handling'

rent something off turo

ps4s will get you from A to B in freezing temps if you drive normal, follow the speed limit, and leave room to brake. I do it all the time. Even my GT3 on cup2s will get driven if its above 40 F.

But once you mix accumulated snow / slush into the equation it gets very dicey and just not worth it. especially on a twisty mountain road.

either get snow tires or rent something else.

M3 is a tank in the snow (when fitted with appropriate tires)

Agree with everyone. Don't do it. I live in Canada so we get snow often. One year early in the season, friend of mine forgot he still had summers on and drove out after we had a light dusting of snow. All the roads were clear, but the alleys/parking lots weren't. He got stuck in a flat parking lot with a thin layer of snow in a FWD golf. Don't do it!
