Sense* Uglier* And that third word with a "y" in it made absolutely no sense. Also, I would consider it a downgrade. Which is faster? I'm guessing the 3 series. If that's the case, a rainbow M by the number 5 on a car that old dose not make it better.

An e39 M5 is leagues faster than any 330i. To the OP, if you have the cash to get it as a second car, by all means do it. The e39 is a beautiful design, and the M5 is a timeless classic. That said, I wouldn't want it as an only car, not when it's that old, and not when it burns through that much gas.

omfg, just read the specs bro. 394hp 0-60 under 5 seconds in a true sedan with a 6-speed trans. wtf, it is most certainly an upgrade from a 330i.
e39 is one of the best looking cars even by today's standards. just think what you could do with a little modding. brilliant: |

As to whether it is an upgrade or a downgrade, that depends on the two cars in question. A mint condition low-miles late M5 would be one hell of a car, and would cost more to buy than the equivalent 330i. It will also cost considerably more to maintain, but you have to pay to play. |

My buddy who drives modded e39 M5 always tells me, despite the fact that I always bitch about the gas mileage, I love my M5. I would never trade it for anything else.
An "M" will always have its reputation regardless of how old it is. And don't forget its a V8

Nein. If memory serves me correct from reading his book, his car is a Dinan tuned M5 with various other upgrades that he did, not a police spec car.

i think the m5 is just a monster. and also a head turner.. with a few mods it would be sick.
