See, you with age, me with hard rock: Ears age!

OP: Get old, or get my taste in music. Both will solve your problem!

Who cares what the OP thinks about the sound? If he likes it, cool, if not, so what? It's not like anyone here is going to post anything that will change his mind

I don't like the idea of active sohnd either but I still think the car is awesome

Myz take the bloody polar bear out of your ears! that high up in the north there is no insects!

My car sounds too quiet, a problem I'm soon to fix as soon as I find a new system I fall in love with instantly. I'm going to ask neighbors opinions, they love my Active sound solving method as it is now also!

+1 million. I was actually just thinking the other day that if nobody had told me and I otherwise had no knowledge that "active sound" existed I never even would have suspected that even a tiny part of the sound was amplified. Funny how the quoted post above - particularly the last sentence - is word for word what I was thinking a few days ago...

I loved the sound of the S65 in my E93 - but I actually like the sound of the F80 just as much. I've received a lot of compliments on how the exhaust sounds, especially when it downshifts and rev-matches (have DCT).

This is a new one....someone from fricking Finland calling me out for living too far North!

We don't need fancy sound enhancement here. Since (according to you) I live on the barren tundra, the sound of the car must travel hundreds of km across the frozen wastes before even reaching another pair of human ears. Put another way, if I rev an active sound difference in Canada so that there is nooone around to hear it, does it still make a noise? Or just 2% of a noise?

Dude was plainly trolling, so we can just thread jack him with our own comments/discussion and ignore him.

As for your point, my expectation is much of the anger at active sound is, as you say, really at the 'idea' of active sound. I doubt anyone can hear much or any of it, but the idea always bugs you just a little bit......which I get. People were mad when Bob Dylan plugged in for the first time too.....

Oh lol I love it when you quote old philosophy classics! Also, I've been away from the north so long, I'm picturing it as a south of France kind of place already. Only thing I haven't gone all romantic view way is the bloody taxing in these cars!

I think then only the 2% is left.

imo its just bad marketing they put it into the cars. specially how it makes no difference. Car people i know hear bmw puts engine noise into there cars, and they think the worse.

I will never understand why active sound is in the car, when it makes hardly a differences.

Because other wise people would yell it is too quiet because, like @lups, they have gone stone deaf listening to Nordic heavy metal. Damned if they do......etc.

FWIW, I try to judge it on the result. It is hard (because I have read enough so I know it is there, so I can't be truly blind or neutral) but, on balance, I like the sound. Turbos have some great characteristics (the snaps, pops, etc) and this doesn't hurt those. Maybe it enhances it all at a subtle level, but I'm ok with the result.

Go outside, I'll rev up my car and you can let me know if you can tell. Of course, it will take about 20 minutes to reach you. Once we both start driving our cars, they'll be complaining about the racket as far away as Yellowknife.

i think turbos can sound pretty cool. the problem is that BMW and other "luxury brands" try to hid the turbo sounds.

unlike pagani

Why do people in this forum, particularly those who don't own an F8X continually try to tear BMW and the F8X down? It really gets old.

Ok. Will put on my lightweight polar bear 'summer parka' and step outside the igloo in 18 min. Sure hope that bob in Edmonton doesn't rev his at the same time - I might go even more deaf.

because BMW is better off without active sound AND according to people here. ( the people who own these cars) say the active sound makes VERY little noise.

They aren't hiding them - quite the opposite, the complaint is they are boosting/enhancing it too much.

But I do agree they should not be sheepish and feel the need to justify their work. They should be all out of the closet proud and 'we're here, we're FI, get used to it!' about it.

You cannot even tell that active sound is even there - nobody who has ever heard me drive by or ridden in my car (that I have talked to) has even suggested that they heard something artificial or out of the ordinary - like I said - without me even bringing up sound that is one of the first things my friends/family have noticed about the car - yes - the sound - in a very good way!

It does seem that active sound just makes the natural sound a little louder - so I think the theory in one of the posts above is quite viable - if you listen to your favorite music and turn up the volume slightly without adusting treble or bass - the song does not sound different - it just sounds a little louder - that is my experience after owning the F80 for about a month now...

Another thing I've noticed - only the paid automobile journalists have complained about the sound being artificial sounding - I've read every English review (and even some reviews translated to English) about the F8x, and am well aware of the widely-published notion that it sounds artificial. I don't recall any non-paid journalists who have ever heard/ridden in the car say so... I personally think that's just journalistic hype...
