When your Porsche dealer knows you are on the market for an M2 Competition...
And then he gives you this... #thecolour
Total cost 90K EUR netto! Yes, netto... I fell off my seat when I heard this. I drove it for about one hour now, mostly on a highway. It is interesting to see how Porsche almost completely removed the true passion from this car by replacing it with the four-cylinder coffee machine in the back. It has a soundtrack, but that is about it... And yes it is rapid, steers better than a M2, handles better than a M2, but is it also 1.5 times the price better....? I will drive it more tomorrow, let's wait and see what my final thoughts will be. MR |

I loved my 981...but it's hard to get over the F4 they put in the 718. To the points you made, those objective "wins" in the performance department are hard to make up for the loss of the car's soul (the outgoing F6).
I do think the 718 GT4 could be one of the best cars Porsche has ever made...IF they give it a real GT-level engine and don't neuter it too badly...look how good the 981 GT4 was, with really long gearing and a fairly pedestrian 911S engine (obviously a very, very good engine, just not a GT variety).

Real question is, do I get the M2C and GT4, or do I just keep the M2 and still get this. Can only daily drive my cars so often, But it's just more money at that point

Yes, emissions is part of the reason, but...
Porsche knew the 718 would be a hot seller in the Chinese market where they have a focus on right now. And I hate to say it (but I will), they are very brand conscience as a country and just having a 'Porsche' logo on their car is enough to grab the interest of many a sport car driver in China. To the point where engine/exhaust sound means very little unless we are talking about the true sports car enthusiast (which there are in China, not denying that). The amount of wealth flooding China is very appealing to all car makers right now... and Porsche is definitely on top of that list. https://www.economist.com/blogs/econ...st-explains-17 The 718 is very capable, but except for the new GT4 (if it is NA 6), I just couldn't spend that kind of dough on a 4 banger. Would be tough... The moment I heard Porsche was putting a 4 turbo in the new Cayman, my interest for the M2 and its upcoming iterations (as well as other brands), got much higher. Who knows, maybe some kind of 911 in the future, but for now I am excited for the new M2s and the very reasonable price it is going for. A 718 GTS for almost $100,000 with some decent options just seems..off. Car looks beautiful in Chalk though! Last edited by csbear; 05-01-2018 at 07:49 PM.. |

718 GT4 is getting detuned 4.0L. I see it being more money than the previous GT4 that had a generic 3.8L. Wouldn't be surprised if your out the door, close to twice the money of a M2C.

You may well be correct but if that’s true, here in the UK it’s getting close to GT3 money

The M2 has room for 4, a real trunk, a 6 cylinder engine for a lot less money, and is very close in performance. But with equal drivers, on a track, I bet the Cayman is a second or two quicker per lap on an average length course. For me, as a long time BMW owner, I'd still rather own a M2, because of practicality, even though I would rather have the Cayman the 6-8 days out of the year that I go to the track. What I don't like about the Cayman is that it's no 911. Although it is a better balanced car, the fact that they artificially de-tune it, to not knock the king of the thrown, is BS. I do think the 911 is better looking abd it also has a bit more room with the 2 rear seats, albeit just for kids. I was just at the track on Monday and the paddock was full of P cars. I have to say, at least for me, the Cayman's just blend in, whereas the 911's are still what get's your attention. A friend of mine brought his new 991.2 GTS and allowed me to take it out for a few laps. Pretty amazing machine. Here is the thing about Porsche's. This car was bone stock and with my friend in the passenger side (so an extra 200 lbs), on stock tires and stock brake pads, I managed to get within just a couple of seconds of my best time in my e46 M3, which has most of the track mods you can do....track pads, suspension, camber plates, R-comp tires, tune, exhaust, 200 lbs weight reduction and on an on. With a little more seat time in the GTS, I would probably be just as fast or faster in this car, on street tires and street pads, and of course way quicker if changing that stuff. Long story short. Porsche's are a bit more ready for track (ab)use than M cars, and that is where the difference lies IMHO. They are true sports cars whereas BMW M cars are sporty cars, but offer more practicality. |
