Display key questions for those who have it

1) how many of these do you get?

2) if you choose the display key option, do you still get 2 of the smaller regular key fobs for days when you don’t want to carry the big azz display key in your pocket?

3) are you happy with the extra functionality, or has the novelty worn off and you’ve gone back to using the smaller fobs?

4) can you get a display key made by the dealer after the fact, even if you originally didn’t order the option on your car?

My wife has a MY18 540i M Sport with and her car has the display key.She also received two regular M Sport keys but starting with the MY19 BMW’s they only give you one regular key when you order the display key.You also get the key card in the MY19 X7.iIf you don’t order the display key then you still get the two regular keys and the key card.BMW basically cheaped out in not still including two regular keys when you order the display key.

2019 X7 with display key here.

You get one display key, one regular key, as noted above.

I've only had it for a few weeks. It's pretty nice. The main feature I use so far is to start the engine and climate control the car before I leave the place I'm leaving (store, home, etc.). You can remote start and do that stuff from the app, but it's a lot easier from the display key.

Don't know if the novelty will wear off, but so far it's pretty cool, and I'm happy to have it.

We live in a pretty cold climate, so having a remote starter is critical. Is the display key the only way to get the car to start remotely or can the iphone app do the same thing?

The iphone BMW app has terrible reviews by the way, so I'm not sure it is an alternative.

I'd like to avoid having my wife constantly carry this big bulky display key.

You can remote start through the iPhone app. I am betting the regular key will allow a remote start as well, though haven't had the chance to try that out yet.

If the regular key allows remote start, what would be the benefit of having a display key? Just to get vehicle info (mileage) etc?

I was just looking at the owners manual. One more thing you can do with the display key and not the regular key is adjust the ride height of the air suspension when you are outside of the vehicle.

One other feature the display key does and not the regular key is remote park the vehicle with the key. This is a very convenient feature if you need to park the vehicle in a very tight parking space.

In Canada it might be - in the US, it isn't. At least not for now on the X7...

That's very disappointing if it's not available on the X7 in the US. I have remote park on my G30 and I find I use it much more than I thought I would. Mainly to pull out of a parking space when someone jams me in and I don't feel like contorting to open the door and slide into the driver seat.

The remote park is NOT currently available on the X7 and also you CAN use the remote start on the regular key (press lock 3 times). It’s more of a novelty, but is the easiest way to set the ventilation. Don’t see me lowering it much using the key...

Thanks for the info.I just assumed that since my wife’s 540i has remote parking with the display key,the X7 would also have the feature.I just looked in the owners manual and there is no listing for remote parking.Hopefully a future software update will enable remote parking.

Display key just seems like a novelty. Who really uses it? I have a display key that came with my 750 and haven’t seen it in months. Thing is huge. Who is remote parking into a tight spot? Let me just ding your door for you before hand because the car next to you most likely isn’t remote parking in or out. Im assuming the X7 has a suspension setting for easy access and lowers when you park similar to range rover/XC90/ every other car with air suspension

I would just order if for fun. On the one hand, it's not a feature with a high value (gadget) but on the other hand, do $300 really matter on such a vehicle?

There isn’t any info in the owners manual about the X7 having an easy access setting that automatically lowers the vehicle to the lowest suspension setting when you put the vehicle in park.

PIPE_DR Is there a setting in IDrive that automatically lowers the air suspension to the lowest setting every time you park the car?Does the X7 also stay in the lowest suspension setting when you get out of the vehicle and lock the car?

I agree that the key is huge. However I find I use it quite a bit to pull OUT of a tight spot.

Here in the Seattle area the spaces are quite narrow and it's not uncommon to return to your car only to find some inconsiderate driver jammed me into a tight squeeze. Pulling out with the remote is much easier than trying to squeeze my way in. The only real downer to remote parking is that the car needs to be turned off before entering the vehicle after pulling out of the space.

Parking INTO a tight spot is the atypical scenario. I would never use it for parking INTO a space unless I'm in a parking garage and find that rare narrow space between two concrete structures that no one wants to park into.

Nantucket, My X7 does not have an auto lowering setting for parking. As a matter of fact there are no air suspension settings in idrive that I've seen. That may be different with off road package, but not sure. the only control I have is rocker switch, driving modes and trunk button. Ill try lowest setting and locking to see what happens tomorrow.

I've been wondering if that's something you could do with coding. Have the vehicle always lower itself to a specific setting every time the car is turned off.

So I tried a couple things. When I set the car at the lowest level this evening (via rocker switch) got out and locked the door. It staying at that setting. I then put the car in sport mode, took it for a drive, got out and locked the door. It returned to standard ride height.

That’s great news that you are able to set it to the lowest level and it will stay there when you lock the door.I guess that means it has to be in comfort mode.
