C/D: X7 M50i Long-Term 30,000 Mile Update

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Overall C/D continues to be impressed by their Long-Term X7, with many positive comments and few complaints.

After just shy of a year, our 2020 BMW X7 M50i continues to rack up the miles with a relentless haste. And with 523 horsepower on tap, a plush cabin, and three rows of seating, it's easy to understand why. The X7 is popular with staffers for many different reasons. For some it's just a large three-row ute to ferry their families, while others enjoy it for the opulence of its interior trappings or the growl of its powerful V-8. It even works great as a tow vehicle. With so many talents, it's no mystery why the X7 M50i is in high demand amongst our staff...

While traversing the winding mountain passages, we were impressed with the X7's sure-footed grip and surprising agility. Despite weighing nearly three tons, the stiff suspension (in Sport mode), massive tires, and rear-wheel steering help deliver a convincingly carlike experience...

This service visit (the final one included in BMW's three-year/36,000-mile complimentary maintenance program) called for just an oil change and a few inspections, but we weren't getting out of the dealership that easy. After confirming that there are no aftermarket windshields or even a shop outside of a BMW dealership that is authorized to replace one, we begrudgingly forked over the $2808 to replace our fractured windshield...

In our last update, multiple editors commented about experiencing intermittent issues with the haptic buttons that surround the elegant crystal shifter protruding from the X7's center console. When present, this issue would render both the haptic feedback and the actual function of the buttons (be it auto stop-start, drive modes, traction control, or the auto hold for the parking brake) inoperable. So, sometimes Sport mode was unavailable, which was a shame, but other times the auto parking brake would refuse to release, which is more than a minor peccadillo when you're in a car wash. Thankfully, we also had the dealer examine that problem while the X7 was in for service. According to them, the culprit was a bit of debris underneath the panel that holds the haptic buttons, and we've had no issues since...

Comments continue to roll in, too. One staffer praised the adaptive cruise control's smooth braking, a quality that she discovered while using the system to rein in her speed after realizing that 90 mph can easily feel like 70 in such a well-isolated space. She also pointed out that a larger fuel tank would be a welcome addition, and while that's not untrue—a Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class holds nearly two gallons more—we've found that the best way to stretch the range of the X7 is to take it easy on the gas pedal. As the X7 nears the end of its stay with us, we're struggling to find much bad to say about it. Yes, the big BMW's fuel economy is subpar, and yes, its cargo space with the third row upright is on the small side given its external proportions. But judged as a whole, the X7 M50i is largely uncompromised and is about as versatile as an SUV can be.

Months in Fleet: 10 months Current Mileage: 30,182 miles
Average Fuel Economy: 17 mpg
Fuel Tank Size: 21.9 gal Observed Fuel Range: 370 miles

It’s interesting and great news that no brake service/replacement was needed in the first 30,000 miles.

Makes me wonder if the extended warranty or maintenance plan is even needed, but I do know things tend to need more work once they get past initial warranty. Which they would keep it longer so we could see how it holds up.

I needed one on my X5 but I also probably drive a bit harder than they do. I'm about to be on tired set #3 (the first ones got retired at 8k miles due to raid debris killing one).

To the average driver, I don't think a brake service is required. Even if occasionally driven hard, it won't be required. I'm at 70,000km on my 440 and other than fluids, nothing has to be replaced as far as wear/year components are concerned.

To me the best full size luxury SUV on the market. Comfortable, luxurious, roomy, and surpisingly quick!

Nice to see the N63 8-cyl engine is doing well, at least this specimen. BMW's 8-cyl engines, including early versions of the N63, did not always have the best reputation for overall reliability when compared to their 6-cyl smaller siblings.

Your 440 weighs about 1000lbs less, so that's to be expected.

Yes but even with the large difference in weight, I wouldn't expect the brakes to wear out quick even in the X7 especially by the clientele that drive these things.

There's no way that thing did 30,000 miles without needing at least one set of tires lol.

Ours has been mostly trouble-free so far through about 11k miles, just a couple small things. Every once in a while we’ll get a Driver Assistance Unavailable error while on the highway, with a pic pointing to some sensors on the rear bumper. Dealer unable to replicate of course. I’m also a little creeped out by the seat massage. If you have the radio off you can hear the air escape, it sounds like somebody behind my shoulder blowing into my ear lol

“...pfff...”

Great car otherwise, really has been wonderful. I remember going to a private reveal event at a local winery when it was first coming out and I thought it was really goofy looking. Since then it’s grown on me a lot, looks proper mean with the blacked-out M trim. Really one of their best front ends imo

they used winter tires and the original summer ones so technically they still have both sets but didn't replace either

BMW X7 is one of those rare cars that have been nearly perfect in both the intent and execution for the target market. Optional V8 would be my power train choice.

Lot's of variables here. Driving habits, type of tires, etc.

My 2020 X7 40i with over 19K on the original All Season Bridgestone Alenza NON Run flat tires have plenty of tread left. I will probably get around 35K miles on these tires before I need to have them replaced.

Damn I'm surprised you haven't changed at least a set of pads yet. I have a M340 with the same M brakes which use the same compound although I'm sure they're much bigger. I'm at 11k miles on my M340 and my brakes feel like they're on their last legs. Nothing left on the pads. Different driving habits I guess.

I don't have an X7, just the X5 but seeing how their on the same platform and share a lot in common is expect similar wear/tear. I don't brake hard or ride mine but they still needed to be changed in 30K miles. it should be noted I have the M Sport brakes. as for tires it'll depend on what type you're running. this set has about 22K and I'm ordering new ones

I think one of their best back ends. this design suits the X7 really well. and, the grill need not be that obvious, even though it blends overall with the car's proportions.
