2019 M550i priced well or overpriced?
I am looking at a CPO 2019 M550i with 38k miles on it and the following packages: Driving Asst Plus, Luxury Seating, Premium Pkg, Executive Pkg, Parking Asst Pkg, Bowers and Wilkins audio, Nappa leather seats, 20" 668M wheels, and ceramic controls. The original warranty is valid through June 2023, then 1 yr of CPO warranty. Sticker shows that it was $89k new. Dealer is asking $58k + TTL. Is this a decent price?
I pored over the maintenance and CPO documentation and looks good overall other than a turbo wastegate that had to be replaced at around 32k miles, which is a bit concerning re: long-term reliability. I know this isn't the best market to buy, but I am looking at $5k in upcoming expenses on my 2012 328i with 130k miles on the odo that has a trade-in value of $5-5.5k, so I am thinking I might as well get into a newer car as long as I am not paying too much of a mark-up obtaining one. I am not considering the 540i. EDIT: I ended up purchasing a 2020 m550i xDrive this weekend (Oct 2022). See post #69 for details.

That's a decent price maybe? Is it CPO? I bought mine with the same spec, though a 2018 last October with around 45k miles for a little over 50k. Hard to judge mate. All I'll say is if you really like it, am extra 2-3k shouldn't matter. 58k is not entirely absurd. Would you have jumped on it had it been 55? If the answer is yes, well, congratulations on your M550i. This spec is rare to find. Trust me.

sounds like a great price to me - for a 550 with all the goodies.
especially since you can't get most of that stuff now - like the b&w |

A BMW or the M550i in particular? How many miles does yours have and any issues with it that I should be aware of? What year is yours?

That's what is tempting. OTOH, I don't have any issues spending the $5k on my 328i and continue to DD it (some of it is just routine big ticket maintenance anyway), but at 10 yrs and 130k miles I don't want it to be the beginning of a spending spree. So I am kind of in two minds - can't decide whether to keep the 328i which has been very reliable and enjoyable, or save the $5k expense + get $5k in trade-in, and splurge on an M550i.

That price isn’t too bad. I was in a similar situation. I had a ‘13 535i with roughly 140k miles looking at about 7k in maintenance. I ended up getting a great trade in and picked up an ‘18 M550i with 27k miles on it for low 50’s but mine only had the 668m rims and Napa leather. Love it and happy I pulled the trigger. Gas mileage on the other hand…. Lol.

I don't blame you for locking in on the 550. If I could afford the car and the maintenance, I'd go buy one tomorrow and probably wouldn't care about the deal all that much. It seems like a "checks all the boxes" dream car. I include the maintenance part because it seems that the V8 objectively, in general terms, requires more maintenance/TLC. That's from everything I read before I bought and everything I've read and seen here since. But it seems for those that have it, it's worth it. No one has given me any argument or sunshine pumping about the V8 being, on the whole, the same in terms of reliability, longevity, and maintenance as the B58 I6. But they all say it's worth it and maintenance comes with a super high performing and powerful engine. I think that's really fair, honestly. And when I'm in a spot to do it, I will.
If you don't mind me asking, what turned you off to the 540? I love mine, but again I admit that I'd have a 550 tomorrow if it was the right timing for me. That said, the 540 is no slouch.

On my test drives I drove the 540i and M550i back to back, and I thought the 540i was amazing! But, I can afford an M550i, and whatever I get now is most likely my last ICE, so I'm leaning toward enjoying the V8 that I have heard so much about.

As for your pragmatism fighting your zest for life, I understand and see it every day in my job in finance. The people with that quality are the people that one day can truly afford the finer things without stress. The challenge, sometimes but not all, is getting them to do it! I'm on the opposite end… impatiently trying to learn to be patient and pay my dues. Young family, kids, young career, etc. Frankly, I'm beyond fortunate to get to enjoy the luxuries I've got. And the 540 makes it easier! If I were you, based on the situation you described, I'd find the 550 that checks all your boxes and buy it. No one wants to get screwed, but I wouldn't let a few percent keep me from getting something I will enjoy and appreciate. Good luck!

Sure, buy the 550 and enjoy it, but don't even think about keeping it to 130K miles like you did with your 328i. Unload it when the CPO warranty is ending and trade into another vehicle. Hopefully the car market will have returned to planet earth by summer 2024.

I want to add that I truly appreciate all the encouraging posts, but I am also all ears for the posts saying otherwise, esp from those having experienced the N63TU2 engine. I am not looking for confirmation of my decision to pursue an M550i, so I am happy to be talked off the ledge if needed. Please keep chiming in!

on one hand, you have your existing car that is: a) an older smaller model (without toys and refinements of newer models) b) up for expensive maintenance that's required around that mileage point anyway and in this currently upside down supply chain constrained world scenario, you find an m550i with: a) all the options, b) existing warranty c) additional CPO warranty d) the option of getting rid of your older vehicle without having to pay for the expensive maintenance e) it's an m550i (more than enough power to keep you grinning every time you mash down on the gas pedal) but the newer car does have some (reasonable amount of) mileage One last consideration: a) You can buy more warranty afterwards too (great pricing on that through a forum member here) b) with the topsy-turvy supply chain issues, and the inherent vehicle mystique and options that aren't currently available, you will still be able to sell it for close to, if not your actual purchase price or higher next year and oh one more thing: a) prior to buying, request a full software update of everything (idrive, maps, istep, etc etc) b) pore over the NNHTSA TSB's released for the first 2 weeks and get everything replaced that hasn't been replaced yet, but is up for replacement as per TSB (some will just get sorted out by software update above) |

Just FYI, I bought my 2020 M550 in Sept 2021 for $67k. It had 11k miles and every package you mentioned except the Bowers and Wilkins, but I do also have the DHP package, which is excellent. I'd say the price is right for a 2019. The 2020's and up have the big power boost though, and that was what I was looking for. I also wanted years of factory warranty left just in case. You asked if your insurance will go up. The answer is definitely YES. I'd call your ins company and get a quote. Last edited by HerkHealer; 03-09-2022 at 09:12 AM.. |
