X7 Brake rotor and pads quote SMH..

So today I reached out to BMW of Nashville, to inquired about front and rear brake rotors/pads for the Big-baby. I'm sitting at 49k miles on original r/p. I have no issues at this time with stopping power.

Here's the quote seems excess .

A brake job on your car would entail new pads, rotors, and sensors. We don't typically do just rotors as the existing pads will wear them inconsistently and will likely just have you back in the shop in a month for a new set.

For the front the parts would come to $1,425.88, rears would be $978.75, labor is $199.99 each front and rear, plus taxes and fees you'd be looking at about $1,800 for the fronts, and $1,350 for the rears.

Other quotes:
Oil changes $ 151.00
Wheel alignment $260.00

How hard is it to do brakes yourself on these big babies?

Brakes haven't changed that much on the front as far as labor is concerned, but the rears do require a few more steps due to the electric parking brake....

My reason for posting is that the parts total seems awfully high comparted to what you can get shipped to your door, insured, from a BMW dealership....(e.g. here)

Using this catalog, for part numbers and running them through the dealership's website provided above, I get the following:

- 395x36, rotor, front, Rt, 34116887397: $256.84
- 395x36, rotor, front, Lt, 34116887398: $256.84
- Front Pads: $237.64
- Front Brake Sensor, 34356870353: $22.40

Total: $773.72 (before tax and shipping)

If you buy from the dealership above, there is no sales tax (Texas) and shipping is free and always insured if you purchase $900 or more at once...so you can do the same thing for the rear brakes, you can order all of it at once and get free shipping...the rotors are very heavy.

I'm blown away that your dealership can get away with a 1.8x markup on parts. I didn't do your rear brakes, so the markup on those parts may differ.


Note: Please double-check the P/N's...I used "July-2020 build date" in the catalog to look up parts...and some of parts were updated August 2020 with different part numbers, but their respective piece prices didn't change, so the total price should still be somewhat accurate. Additionally, I'm not affiliated with the dealership I provided a link to...I just think saving money is a good thing.

Oil change and wheel alignment prices are very reasonable compared to where I live. My dealer wanted $230+taxes for oil change alone. And I think I paid more for alignment, but don't recall the exact amount unfortunately.

Do the pads and rotors yourself. The biggest issue I ran into was the set screw for the rotors were very difficult to get loose. It really is a diy job. You can go with Brembo pads and Zimmerman rotors and do it for less than 1k.

Ledphut the video was on point, thumbs up..

Is there a such thing as to putting the vehicle into service mode before you do the job? Someone commented on the video about that.

M_Bimmer that parts catalog is a money saver.

BMW of Nashville (Brentwood) is a upscale area plus the dealership is fairly new so there inflation tax is in full effect. Good looking out brother.

rock auto has the bestprices- i got the brembo NAO ceramic pads for my 40i there.
brembo UV coated are 2 piece oe rotors. brembo makes the bmw front pads, they also make for the rear.

you can find the part numbers here:

rock auto has the best prices ive seen so far. roughly 1K total for front and rear pads, and 2 piece uv coated rotors (stock pads are either TRW or ATE).

the N pads are NAO ceramic, tiny bit less bite than oem pads, 95% less dust, ive had them on since october and really like them. same bonding as OEM, so no squeaks or rattles (the front pads look identical to the ones i took off aside from the red color to the back of the pad that the NAO pads have)

for the rears you need a three pin piston press to turn them while pushing them. the only thing to be aware of is that theres an inboard and outboard pad in the rear. the inboard pad (contacting the piston) has the dimples spread out to avoid the piston; the outboard pad has them closer together. you MUST apply the parking brake before you touch the brake pedal after pressing in the rear caliper or else you'll throw an error and disable the power brake function (failsafe mode). otherwise its easier than on cars that used to have the parking brake drum in the hat of the rear rotor. if you live in a place where theres salt and the rotor retaining screw might be stuck, recommend soaking it with pb blaster and using one of these: https://www.amazon.com/CRAFTSMAN-Imp...dp/B07R96M9VW/

Have you measured your brake pad thicknesses, or are you just assuming 49K miles = brake job?

X7 DIY Brake replacement rotors/pads/sensors

If you have changed pads and rotors on a car/SUV before, then you should be ready to do it on your X7. No special tools are required. The only thing I had to buy when I changed out ours on our 2021 X7 with blue calipers (~32k miles), were the e-torx sockets to remove the caliper and rotor bolts.

If you don't use a scantool to put the e-brake in service mode, then you will also have to disconnect/unscrew these motors from the rears and rotate the motor manually before reinstalling. There are many youtube videos on how to do this-its the same across almost all 2019+ BMW models.

I'd say it took me 4 hours to do the whole job. I did the rears first and then a few days later I did the fronts. Take your time and follow the video above and it's a very doable job. One important point about the fronts is make sure you put in the spring/clip back in the same orientation as you took it out.

The parts are tricky to get, as BMW has changed part #s. You can go with the ceramics like Orient330, or I went with an oem factory replacement-and yes the brake dust is as bad as before-here are my part #s (rotors are all Brembo):

34-21-6-890-353: REAR BRAKE PADS
34-11-6-889-585: FRONT PADS
Disc Brake Rotor - Rear (370mm) 09.D901.13
Disc Brake Rotor - Front Driver Side (395mm) 09.D897.13

to wind back the rear pistons, you'll need to press the pistons back anyway, saves having to remove the ebrake motor.

either way, just make sure you engage the parking brake before touching the brake pedal after you do the rears.

if the bonding on the fronts hasnt failed, you'll need to push back the pistons then break the bond to remove the pads. i had a terrible time getting them out even with nylon wedges, ended up prying them out by the pad ears while protecting the caliper with a nylon wedge. it probably didnt help that i did the change in late october/early november. it will be alot easier if you remove the calipers to do the rotors, i was replacing the pads only, so didnt have as much room to break the bond from the piston to the pad.

I don’t know if you’re ever in Memphis but you could see if Roadshow is cheaper. Based on what they quoted for my M550 and what they charge for oil changes and alignment, they might be better.
