How to remove wheels?
I am going to ceramic coat my wheels when I get a winter set and thought I could remove them since I have the spare tire with jack and stuff. I checked and it has an ordinary nut socket but my wheels need special Allen type key. I don't have wheel locks yet. Not sure what would have happened if I needed to put on the spare. Should I have received the proper Allen socket with the car or is it something that needs to be ordered? Looks like I also don't have the tow hook either. Links to part needed would be helpful.
Thanks, Victor Last edited by Vindigni; 10-08-2024 at 10:55 PM.. Reason: Forgot to add something |

If your lug bolts are the same as mine (and are OE), they have a 17mm hex drive outside and a T55 inset. The inset can be useful in getting the bolt threaded in and fished out, but I always use the 17mm socket to break loose and tighten. If you're missing the tow hook, check around the spare tire area to see if it's buried somewhere. Then get one from a dealer if you need a replacement.

I feel so dumb not to notice the outside of the bolt. I saw the inner part and thought that's what was needed. Yes it's 17mm. I'm going to order a long socket with protective sleeve. I checked around my spare and there is no tow hook. I will talk to the dealer when I get my winter wheels/tires.

Don't buy a tow hook at the dealer. I still need to get one online, I can share what I choose. I also recommend a towing knuckle to go with the hook. In the very rare chance you need the tow hook, having a tow knuckle is nice to have if any type of directional/elevation adjustments are needed.
You might also want a heavy duty tow strap depending on how deep down the preparation rabbit hole you want to go. |

I was thinking to see if they will just give me one. I think it should have come included in the car. If not I’ll check out the one you’re talking about when you share it. Thanks

Get this set of wheel holders is my advice. Save your back
The wheels and tires are not light. Having these studs helps with reinstallation. You don't need a full set but they're cheap and come in a nice case so I bought that set above. Put on multiple coats of ceramic coating. While it helps a little, I've never found a ceramic coating that brake dust won't stick to. Most falls off but like people, there's always some that sticks around when you don't want them to.

I recently ordered a pair of the studs to help guide the wheel on/off. That should help a lot and prevent damaging the wheel or my back. Thanks for the advice on doing 2 coats for the wheels. If it helps at all I'll be happy. I clean my wheels more often than the whole car. That brake dust is terrible. I'm getting the winter set next month and will coat both sets of wheels at that time.

Question to the G07 owners…where did BMW put the tow hook? In the F15 & G05 X5, the tow hook has a storage location right below the cargo floor…when you lift the floor, the tow hook is right there (visible in pic below of a G05 X5 that also has the spare tire kit)….and it’s in the same location on the f15 X5…except BMW was also giving owners a screwdriver, too.

Thanks...glad to know that you still get it...unlike the screwdriver and wrenches.
