Yeah if I were to bet I would put my money on this. When I rebuilt my intake manifold I found all sorts of cracked lines and my oil separator was clogged dumping oil into my intake manifold. Vanos solenoids are the easiest to check.

I also have an 06 330. Make sure you have cleaned your VANOS Solenoid filters too. They aren't built into the solenoid like the later models. There are two of them on the side of the block.

Good advice on cleaning or replacing the screens - but all N52 vanos units are the same (as well as N54, N55, and S55), including the filters.

FWIW when my eccentric shaft sensor & vanos where going out, I had the most horrid timing issue. VCG was leaking, cyl6 was drowning in oil, eccentric shaft sensor was also drowning and I guess the vanos were just filthy/doneyuns (can't remember, my bad...) Contributing kinda late, tbh, didn't read the second page (in app) of the thread... I'd totes check your valve cover [if this hasn't been said already..lol...] to just be certain. oh and my car would stall / die if I didn't give it some gas. Statie thought I was revving at the light to just be a shithead-
Was a super time...
Hope this helps, sorry if it's repetitive!

Thanks for the clarification hassmaschine. The VANOS Solenoid on my 2013 X5 (N55) has a built in screen so I assumed there wasn't another auxiliary one.
