Got it. I must have been confused between the X5 and X7 on the roof rails.

I have the M50i with roof rails. I think it was standard with the M50i.

They do have different roof rails. The X5's are flat against the roof (blend in a bit more with M Sport package) and the X7's are raised.

Any of you guys have experience with cargo box on the X7? I want to get one for the family X7 when we go on trips. I think the easiest way is to get the cargo box from BMW directly, but I have seen a lot of people on this forum going with the Thule?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The BMW cargo box is made by Thule, it's just re-branded and more expensive. Whether you go Thule or not, I can offer the following advice: 1. You need to purchase the Cross Bars first, I bought them from BMW directly as the fit is designed specifically for the X7's roof rack and they're super easy to install. Part # 8271 2 455 808 2. An optimal cargo box size is the size of the Thule Force XL which I pictured earlier and above. Look up those dims and buy whichever brand you like. Thule makes an outstanding product. Mine is 10 years old and looks brand new. 3. If you go that size, you can buy a Set of 6 Nike 24" duffel bags in different colors so that a) each passenger gets the same amount of packing space and b) you're ensured they will fit in the cargo box. I pack the Nike duffels in the cargo box when not in use, whip 'em out when the box goes on the roof. Coordinating the luggage with the cargo box is more important (and ultimately convenient) than you think. |

Happy to help. Being named Vice President Of Transport Logistics in my family is a role I take very seriously, LOL.
My wife always falls in love with a specific car and then it’s my job to figure out if all the people fit, if all the car seats work, if there’s room for a stroller, etc. Living with a cargo box is extremely liberating in those regards however you’ve got to pick the right cargo box and make sure the luggage therein is distributed equally amongst the passengers. |
