If you haven't seen it, check out the South Park episode titled "Smug Alert." Stan's dad is driving the kids around town in his new Prius, yelling at SUV drivers, when Stan points out they had an SUV until last week, and now they're using more gas to drive around yelling at people.
At least there are some Prius drivers who have a sense of humor. |

I wadded a brand new Yamaha R6 a few years back when a car suddenly came into my lane on the Northern California coast, trying to pass a truck with a camper shell across double yellow lines, and I grabbed a whole bunch of brake. I fractured a thumb (thought it was my wrist) and the bike was totaled, so I called my neighbor and asked him grab my truck and pick me up. He was thoughtful enough to bring a t-shirt, shorts and flip flops so I would be more comfortable. When we got to the emergency room in Ukiah, the triage nurse started going off on me about riding without proper gear because it looked like I had road rash above my knees. It was actually impact tattooing from the lining of my rs-Taichi race suit. I told her that I probably would have been an airlift if I wasn't wearing some of the best gear available and invited her to go out to my truck and look at the suit, Arai helmet and Held gloves that had done their job in saving my life, but gave their own in the process. |

I have a bike and can say 90% of bike accidents are avoidable. I might ride it a tad aggressively, but I know to stay in front of traffic. I'm always scanning ahead and covering my brakes, I constantly scan for "what if" scenarios and look for exits, lane placement is key. I Make as much eye contact with people in their mirrors as possible. Bike riders aren't given enough respect in the States and aren't considered by most on the roads. They should always be given the right of way like pedestrians and cyclist. In Europe bike riders are more common and are treated differently and with caution.

I feel much safer on a racetrack at 150 mph with a motorcycle than at 35 on the street. No inattentive people in cars, generally no kids or animals running into the street in front of you... although I did almost hit a huge snake that was crossing Turn 6 at Laguna Seca.
I was about halfway tipped into the turn when I saw the guy in front of me stand his bike up to avoid it... I just rode straight off into the gravel trap. Hitting that sucker at full lean probably would have produced a nasty highside when the rear started spinning up on slippery snake guts, then hooked up on dry pavement again. |

I'm with SFCM, the same rules apply to motorcycles as cars. Special rules for motor cycles? That wouldn't change much anyway because the fundamental problem is people in cars not paying attention and turning into a space where a motorcycle they didn't see is.

Pushbikes don't get right of way on Australian roads, they're subjected to the same laws as other vehicles. But I do think speed limits shouldn't apply to motorbikes outside city limits. Bikes can stop and steer at a much faster rate than cars, and a motorbike travelling at 100mph has far less energy than a SUV travelling at 55. If a motorbike is in an accident, it always comes off second best. Basically, I think lane splitting should be legal, but riders should be at least 50% legally responsible for almost any accident involving them and a car. I don't think all road rules shouldn't apply to bikes, but I do think a second set of rules should apply which account for the fact that bikes are smaller, faster, more agile than cars, and that riders have much more 'skin in the game' and are basically invisible on the road. |

All of them. Ride a motorcycle and you'll understand.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
