We - the community of BMW drivers - can only wonder what decision making process led to the launch of XM.
Is it a low volume technology demonstrator? Product in search of a probable customer segment (if a sufficient number buyers surfaces)? Is probable customer segment actually sustainable? One perhaps may never know. Yet Harvard Business Review (www.hbr.org) might want to take a closer look at XM launch. Two likely outcomes: unequivocal success or underwhelming - by a wide margin - product launch. My vote is with the second outcome. But I will wait for the HBR article to be published. |

Exactly what they wanted to achieve. They got rid of the base and pushed the "competition" version, which is terrible value for the extra horsepower. Marketing 101! So now pay 8,300 + competition difference and think "not bad".

Put that in the next M5 and crank up the S65 from 7 to 9.5 (they always leave something on the table) and I’m in. Heck, if someone bought me that monstrosity, I’d at least keep it for a while… who knows, might even grow to like it as I did with mushrooms—a fair comparison, too, they’re are equally f’ugly on the outside.

“BMW has let its artistic side flourish to direct the company in a completely new direction at this critical juncture in automotive history. No longer bound by its historical commitments to engineering cohesion or tasteful simplicity, BMW is morphing into a marketing-led company with a new vision: ‘a vehicle for every niche of well-heeled consumer.’ The new XM Label Red typifies the dramatic extent to which BMW will reach. “This is for the customer who has high values, tattoos, won’t eat at that French restaurant,” stated lead chief designer of the entire company (also responsible for the reimagined front end of the M3, M2, M4, entire 4 series, all i products, etc.) stated at launch. This effort appears at a crucial time for BMW. Throwing everything against the wall, they are facing an uphill battle to gain ground in response to a lagged response to emerging EV technology. BMW holds only 4% of the massive global EV market. Will this foray spread them too thin? Will their EBIT margins recover from their enormous R&D budget? Will their simplification of UI/UX and expansion of their lineup to 1,000 different models be a success? Will their geographical expansion and the dramatic growth of buying power in China help them overcome competitive pressures? Will their peacocking with a ridiculous new XM label red model help distract the myriads of people flocking to the tesla model Y?” See exhibits A-Z, charts! Graphs! P&L’s! Geographical demand! The exact concern I posted on the X5M forum and radio silence. . I was thinking this weird powertrain will scrap my M5 touring aspirations.

This vehicle just bums me out as it will almost certainly be a laughingstock for many years, potentially damaging the value of M brand. Ugh. I had to stop reading all the marketing BS on the XM. It hurt my head and insulated my intelligence. It read like and Instagram post.
I am hanging onto my 22f95. Last full ICE BMW super sav (and f96 as well).

Although I do still have some hope that even if it gets this same setup it will have been tweaked enough to be a better performance in that version than as experienced in the XM. Seems like the XM is more of a test bed for the high performance hybrid setup than anything else.

In a design so polarizing, the last thing you would want to to is add more contrast. Any light colors like BG will make the whole car even more questionable than it already is. Mixing light colored painted panels with all of the shiny black plastic body cladding will be a design nightmare. This car looks best in black, label red or the standard trim, as it blends/hides all of the strange proportions.

Completely agree. The new 7 series interior can justify its price and even one much higher. The XM is just a parts bin interior of X5M and X7 components. Can’t understand why they chose this interior to move so far upmarket, they should have just put a sport version of the new 7 series interior in the XM, at least that would have been more at home in a 160-180k SUV.
