No, the cutoff was last Friday/late Thursday. From that point on the vehicles are not subject to the stop sale.

the failure rate, either projected or real life is really low.
BMW projected that there was a 1% failure rate. field data that led to the recall was:
Between June 2022 and February 2024, BMW became aware of approximately 48 customer
complaints, concerns, and/or instances, 100 dealer field reports, and 459 warranty claims that
relate, or may relate, to the issue identified in this report.
assuming that the 48 complaints and 100 dealer field reports are correlated to the 459 warranty claims, with an original recall of 80,000 cars, that works out to 0.57% actual failures.

it seems like most of the failures were early on, although if its metal contamination working its way into a sensor, it could happen at any time as long as the contamination is in the system... since its sealed, its not going anywhere.

i did idly wonder if the brake fluid flush would mitigate it- im pretty sure my 3rd year flush will come due before my car gets its IB replaced (7/27/2025)

I am somewhat confused. Mine entered QC on the 12th. It has been listed there since. Am I correct in assuming that it was probably built with the defect and is now subject to the stop sale? If so, how what event will release it from limbo?

likely it was built with suspect parts. if they are holding in QC most likely they will replace the IB and then ship to dealer
the parts priority is probably
1) new production
2) cars like yours in QC (the factory only has so much space
3) cars on stop sale at the dealers
4) cars out in the wild

As mentioned above, that is correct. They are holding the vehicles in QC and they will be cleared there before getting shipped to the dealers.

Thanks. Can you or anyone else provide a rough idea of what mileage failures have occurred at?

Maybe someone can chime in as I don't ever recall folks mentioning there mileage when saying they had the issue.

My i5 has 5500 miles on it and has done it three times in the last two weeks.

Thanks! Has anyone had the problem for the 1st time at a significantly higher mileage?

Thank you, Orient330iNYC, for those numbers. It puts things in perspective.

Thank you aptekcom since you are the first person to report (that I have seen) that actually has had the issue. I got my X5 last Friday as it did not show up as part of the stop sale and now it shows up as recalled. I love the vehicle but am concerned if I should be limiting how or how much I drive it.

I believe an i5 is probably in the same weight range as my Xdrive 40i (about 5000lbs +-). My SA suggested it feels like manual brakes. I have not driven a car with manual brakes since the 1980s and it was probably about 3800 lbs (ratty 1968 GTO). That required a strong push but was safe and manageable. How does it feel? Is it manageable? Are you driving differently? Parking it? Only driving locally? I know the numbers suggest it is not likely to happen but I do drive a good amount on highways where the traffic speed is 70-80 mph and losing all power assist and needing to slow quickly is concerning.

Thanks

for what its worth, if this failure happens, the parking brake will engage with the brake pedal push to assist with braking. the parking brake is an electromechanical actuator on the rear brake calipers that will apply both rear brakes. from my own experimenting with the parking brake at speed, it does supply a good amount of braking power on its own (i had a rust ring on my rear rotor due to installing a rear pad incorrectly that i was trying to get rid of)

(dont try this at home btw, apparently engaging the parking brake at speed is supposed to trigger a bmw assist call. i didnt know that but it never popped up for me)

i dont think there have been any reports of accidents resulting from the manifestation of the fault. based on the latest report that bmw filed with NHTSA there have been no accidents, injuries, or property damage due to the fault.

I still drive my family around normally, with the knowledge that its a rare fault and if it happens (it will throw a big error message on the main screen) to be prepared to need to apply more force on the brake pedal.

Thank you. I am going to keep that in mind and continue to drive carefully. I really like my new X5 and I gave my old one back so my only other option is a rental or take my son's car which is really not an option.

In the three times that mine has happened so far, they have all been at a signal light. I’m not sure if that’s luck or by design. After it happens all the lights on my dash light up and then power braking is essentially disabled. When I want to brake, I push down on the brake pedal and I have to push down further than normal and harder than normal and then it will start braking. It’s harder to stop, but since I know the problem is there I automatically leave a lot of space just in case. The first two times it happened, I only had to drive about a mile and then yesterday when it happened I had to drive about 10 miles and on the freeway in traffic. I was able to navigate With little issue besides it just being annoying to deal with. Since my car is electric, the regenerative braking completely stopped working as well. I spoke with the dealer again yesterday and their plan is to replace the brake booster with another one, even though there may not be an actual solution to the brake booster yet. He said there are so few cars that this is happening to, that by replacing the brake booster, he hopes it to resolve the issue at least until the recall is finalized.

There definitely is a solution to the recall and has been for months. What he is likely confused about is the stop sale. For that there has not been a remedy issued yet. That is likely due to the mileage requirement since for the recall the vehicle must have at least 170 miles on it before the part is changed. Obviously they aren't going to drive customer sold vehicles that far so they are working on a software solution.

1. Why is 170 miles required before a part change?

2. How can a software solution fix the hardware problem?

The original SIB from March 3rd did not have the 170 mile requirement. When they pulled the solution in April it was due to a software problem with low mileage vehicles.

The updated SIB dated May 28 contained the new requirement for the 170 miles and the next day the message went out to resume the call remedy.

I guess it could all be coincidence but not very likely.

FWIW; My x7 has been stuck at QC for two weeks. My dealer just texted me saying my car will be in within two weeks. I queried about the stop sale order and he replied, “ There is for all SUV's but BMW let us know all should be completed by end of next week!”

We shall see

Do you believe that BMW found a right fix to the problem? After I read the news happened from February, I am not sure. Last week, I was buying new countryman U25 (same platform with X1). I am from Turkey. My dealership informed me about the stop sale. But he called me yesterday and he said that they will release the car tomorrow. I'm in trouble to decide buy the car or not. Because it seems that BMW did not find a permanent solution yet and I don't believe that they can find. What is ur advice?

I believe that is a tough call, but if it were me, I would wait until the cause is clearly defined. We'll see what others think.

There never was a problem to solve as the part was designed correctly to begin with. The issue is that on certain production runs one of the suppliers overtorqued the plugs. Thye supposedly ended the contract with that supplier.
