I had an '03 5-speed Elantra for 12-13 years. Bought it after I saw kids playing football (with a real football) in the parking lot at work with my then-9-month-old TT in bounds, and it also worked out that winter was coming up at that point so I could keep the TT out of some of the salt. I grew to really like driving it; it spend more time at WOT than all my other cars combined, and was more fun on the streets since its limits were so much lower and approachable than those of the TT, RS 4, TT RS, or M4. Highway on/offramps and curves that caused those cars to be bored could be quite exciting in the Elantra, and rev-matching and heel-toeing in a car without any drive-by-wire anything was almost refreshing. Unfortunately, my girlfriend's Mini ended up with some engine scoring a couple years ago so she inherited the Elantra, then a deer promptly jumped out in front of her and did a ton of damage to the ~$1200 car. I miss it.
Like has been mentioned, it's nice to have a car that you don't care about cosmetically, etc.

I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty as the car I take to places that I would not drive the '18 F80 to. e.g hardcore shows, sketchy places, limited or bad parking situations, Home Depot
I like having two vehicles however lately I've been thinking if it's worth the cost of maintaining two vehicles. |

plus just having a beater means when you are done with your car, you can sell it, kick back, and patiently find your next dream car. No need to be suckered into a new lease the day you trade in. you can find a clean used example instead and save more money. |

Well it's not really a beater per se, but I have a 2019 Mazda cx-3 awd that I drive in winter. As soon as the snow melts it takes the BMW place in storage until the snow flies again. It's actually a great little car!

My X5M is my daily, but I also have my "beater" that is a 2002 Subaru WRX. That car used to be my daily, yet I also modified it along the way, as I have owned it since 2006, so it has bigger turbo along with all of the supporting mods, most of the suspension and brake stuff from an STi, or aftermarket parts, but looks nearly stock inside and out. Never worry about weather issues in it with snow tires, don't care about the paint, added a couple anti-theft features to keep it from walking off...
I also have a 2011 GMC Sierra for pickup duties, which came in more handy living up in Alberta than it does back here in Denver. Then there is the old 1993 Honda Prelude that has seen something like 6 different engines, and is basically just a race car, it hasn't had plates on it, or seen a public road, in 5+ years. If I retuned it a bit milder, and put a cat on to pass emissions, I could drive it again, but I feel a bit old to drive a car like that daily any more. |

I daily drive a '15 Mini Cooper S, but my beater is my trusty 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited. Good for dog haulin', trips to the mountains, Home Depot runs... But still has heated seats!

My wife just traded in her 2012 Yaris for a 2019 RAV4, so I guess that's the "beater" now. It is actually really nice in the Premium trim, so I wouldn't really classify it as a beater car TBH. I also have a 2001 Miata that is track duty only (still street legal, can drive to/from the track), so maybe that counts?

Dont really have a beater, but I bought a 2018 Nissan QASHQAI to use as my work wagon, so I could have an M3 as my fun personal drive. Done about 50/50 of my driving in each, though Im thinking about consolidating into a single awesome wagon like a C63S.
If only BMW made an M3 estate! |
