I believe the RS3 would compete the M3/M4 only on the weight, but on nothing else.
The first round of reviews are not very flattering for the RS3, and most of them concluded that the Golf R should be more fun. I believe that the choice of Haldex instead of Torsen (as in RS4/5) is not doing any favor to RS3.

From http://www.evo.co.uk/audi/rs3 "The thing is, and it’ll take a twin test to be sure, we strongly suspect the Golf is the more exciting car to drive." From http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-rev...k-2015-review/

If it was available in the US when I was getting my M3 three weeks ago, I'd have gotten an RS3 for a daily driver living up here in Boston. Love my M3, but probably would have gotten an Alfa 4C Spider for a weekend car.

I am a big Audi fan and had a 2011 S4 and now a 2015 S3. I immediately placed a deposit and have the first position at my dealership for the RS3 when it is available to order. I like the S3 very much but the RS3 will be even more special, especially with it's engine. I want an AWD daily driver, that is practical, has 4 doors, and will still be quick enough to be enjoyable. The S3 is great and it "feels" much smaller and lighter compared to my M4. The M4 feels large at lower speeds, but it shrinks around you and feels more agile and nimble as speeds increase. The S3 feels small and nimble at slower speeds, but lacks the raw and aggressive feel of the M4 as speeds increase. The S3 is not slow at all, but the RS3 will close the gap to the M4 in terms of power. What I like about the Audi S and RS is that I can be as aggressive as I want to be and it is a lot less likely to bite you and is better suited to a novice driver such as myself. With the M4, it is a car that I need to continue to grow into as its limits are beyond mine and I am not a talented enough driver to push it to its envelope without the nannies on.

RS models don't come very often and the S3 was purchased as a simple daily driver. It is not a 911S, GT3, or an exotic and is not an expensive vehicle (relatively speaking) especially compared to what people are paying for Suburban's, etc. I will gladly eat the cost and purchase the RS and will enjoy it daily. Everyone has their threshold for what they want to pay or not and I find this "for me" to be very acceptable. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that is fine.

I love my Audis. I bought a new S3 last month with the intention of upgrading to the RS3 when it got closer to release. Shortly after purchasing the S3, I became exponentially bored with the drive. I was intending to put my deposit down for the RS3 last week, but decided to do another quick check of what's out there. I test drove an M3 and was able to borrow it overnight. The day after I went and tested some more Audi's - RS5 and 4. Absolute cracker engines, but night and day coming from the M3. Even the higher model Audi's have the same dull feeling I experience with the S3. The M3 is really a drivers car. So Im picking up my MW M4 next week and couldn't be happier

Traded my 14 s4 for my current m3. The sports diff is definitely a must have in any audi. The car was great in every way except it was kind of boring. Obviously great as a dd but even in the rain I'd drive my GTR. I found myself driving it a lot less.

So instead of a $70k M3, you would have chosen a $55k RS3 plus a $70-80k Alfa 4C? Not sure I follow the math...

I'm talking about having a very comfortable, sporty, practical, capable all weather daily driver, AND a totally impractical dropdead gorgeous exotic weekend car for nice weather. You are on a car forum, how do you not get that concept? |

What I'm asking is, why did you get the M3 in the first place? It's more of a practical sporty comfortable DD but IMO doesn't do the drop dead gorgeous exotic weekend bit well.

I totally agree with you mc3456. It is nice to hear other people who feel the same way and now the wait begins. I think the special part of the RS3 is the engine. It sounds so good!

BTW...since when does being on a car forum mean people have unfettered license to question other's people choices regarding what they drive, how they drive, how they mod their cars, or how they choose to spend their own money? |

Maybe I'm just too old for it, but the STI is a tough car to commute with on a daily basis, at least in my area with the freeway road quality. The road noise is just overwhelming, and I end up turning up the stereo too high to compensate leaving my ears buzzing when I arrive at work.
