First, they do have shareholders. Second, its not stupid for them. They have done the calculation and the savings is worth it or they wouldn't be doing it.

this is pathetic, my car went over 50k a couple of months ago, made the mistake of not getting extended warranty before going over the 50k, GRANTED 100% MY FAULT, however when I inquired about any extended warranty I could purchase I was told they don't even offer any after the 50k miles, all they offer is one that ONLY COVERS THE ENGINE AND TRASMISSION BUT NOTHING ELSE.... c'mon man they don't believe in their own product at all...why should I???? ......

I'd say you're right, but if there is something wrong with the brake system, then I would be more than willing to bet that they would replace the affected parts.

Also wanted to add that this has nothing to do with BMW not wanting to 'back' their products. If the warranty remains as it is now, then they are still standing behind their cars. Maintenance plan =/= warranty claim.

Not sure if this has been mentioned in the preceding 7 pages but pretty sure my maintenance program in Canada ( 4 yr transferable form 2014) never included Clutch, Brakes, Wiper Blades. I had the option to pay a bit more to upgrade the coverage to include those items. But they were excluded from the basic program as "wear and tear" items.

Sounds like the American version was just to good to be true?

One of the reasons I choose BMW and never keep them past 50k is the free maintenance. This would make me re-consider Porsche or Jag on the next car purchase.

Bad move BMW.

The people who keep making the arguments:

"It's only a single oil change and some wiper blades" ---or---
"If you can't afford wiper blades on your $60,000 car, you should re-evaluate your purchase"

...are missing the point.

If it's such an insignificant difference, why would they bother doing it? It gives off the impression that they're scraping for margins.

It has a negative psychological impact on potential customers.

Consider it to be like "unlimited" cell phone plans. Most people with unlimited plans don't actually use any more data than they could get with a regular plan, but they pay the premium for the "piece of mind" - the thought of not having to worry about ANYTHING under any circumstances.

Sure, financially, it's not as efficient for the customer, but the value of "piece of mind" is hard to determine.

Remember, most people who buy BMWs are not the type of people who are going to be doing their own maintenance. They would rather pay a premium to not even have to think about it. That's why the plan was such a hit in the first place.

I two thought they were privately owned but they do actually trade on the market! They are owned mainly by one family but are publicly traded.

Look it up.

This whole move maybe costs me a couple hundred max so I'll just beat that out of the dealer next time we negotiate price.

Sucks that Lexus doesn't offer the IS in manual, I'd be all over the 200t. I was just on Audi's website and the it seems the A3 and '17 A4 only come in auto dual clutch.

Unfortunately the MT entry luxury-sport car is very limited now.

On an M car, front rotors are about $450 a piece, a little less in the rear. Rotors and pads are $2k in parts alone, a major expense even if you change them yourself.

I would have to have to do this at the end of my lease.

If it's not... then time for me to go back to Japanese since they are easier to maintain (I will never consider a domestic brand).

Nope. It went under maintenance, I asked. The brakes were still functioning, i.e. stopping the car so it wasn't a defect. They just decided it was "accelerated wear" or something, and told me it was going to be be the only free brake job on the X1 I'd ever get.

They would only cover it under warranty if it had some type of catastrophic failure.

I've owned/leased 6 BMWs since 2006: two 5's, one 3, the i8, the M6 and the X5. I daresay that I've saved enough on maintenance to cover the cost of the 3 over the last 10 years.

This is a major difference for serial owners like myself and, indeed, my entire family. Collectively we own 12 BMWs among 7 individuals. Thought I love the driving dynamics of BMWs, I would be forced to look at other brands if the free maintenance went entirely away.

I dropped my maserati ghibli when I found out I had a $4,000 break and rotor job coming up at 14,000 miles. If Bmw makes me pay for maintenance , then might as well have any other car. Lexus , Mercedes, audi , maserati .. There's no reason to stay loyal to Bmw .
