The new grilles are depressingly bad.

The sad part is that even with the grills off the x7, you still see the same huge shape and outline of the buck teeth. There's no hiding it.

Nah. I think it's like the Batmobile in the Animated Series.

The next model will have the grills up to the hood, why have air vents on the front when you can have an open engine

Disliked it when Audi did the big mono-gape grill that swallowed the horizontal bumper line. Then Lexus did the big fish mouth. That was worse. All the while BMW maintained its tasteful design, then 2019 happened.

So the trend is crush headlights down a single LED strip and blow out the grille until it's swallowed the whole front of the car?

It's not affordability as much as this forum is comprised of mostly driving enthusiasts, at varying levels. The membership is more interested in the smaller, more performance oriented models like 2, 3, and 4 series, as well as m2, 3, and 4. These types of cars generally don't have big, shiny grills.

Those customers more inclined toward large, luxury cars tolerate, and probably enjoy the big, shiny grills. If you look at the flagship models for most luxury brands, they usually sport a big, gaudy grill and hood ornament. Given that, the enormous chrome grill doesn't seem so out of place on the 7 series and large suv models.

Also consider that emerging markets exert significant influence over design cues, and other aspects of the product line as well. The growth realized from selling more 7 series, x7, and whatever in China outweighs negative feedback from the shrinking enthusiast market - most of which aren't very interested in the x7 or 7 series anyway.

Regardless, it's still a fun thread.

Awesome. I'll leave this here and wait for a job offer in BMW's design department....

Oh, I don't know... a quick & dirty photoshop with some slats between the X7 headlights matching the lower grille like the old school BMWs + the e30 grill and it doesn't look too bad at all

Integrate it properly and it'd probably look good!

Should have done the video with a G20 vs e30 grille though, would have made more sense?!
