Depends, usually the best way to go is superset: do set of bis then with minimal rest hit tris. This burns a lot of fat and will build solid muscle.

If your going for pure size hit muscle hard 3-8 reps per set, and 2-3 min rest. then move on.

If your doing back/bi or any movement that hits the same muscle you want to wait at least 60 seconds between sets and do the biggest muscles first (finish lats then rows then bis, dont mix bis in early)

in the end it really doesnt matter. just do a couple sets of each. you should be focusing on improving in compound lifts anyway.

As far as workouts for each body part whether its a machine or free-weight, how much should I work on them?

Like 5 workouts for bi's then like 4 workouts for tris and thats it for that day? 4, 5 workouts each body part is good?

Matter of preference. I like to alternate personally.

So you think that a workout that uses supersets cannot possibly burn more fat than one made up of heavy compound movements with long rests in between?

Sure, a metabolically-focused workout can increase fat oxidation and glycogen depletion. I never said it couldnt. What such a workout will not do is, as you stated, build muscle while also burning fat; Increases in muscle mass are brought about by a caloric surplus and progressive tension overload, not by supersetting.

But the number of calories burned by supersetting bi's and tri's is practically negligible anyway.

I didn't state that, someone else did. I was asking you to clarify your statement, which you did.

Dismissing supersetting calories burned as negligible is short sighted IMO. Again, it really depends on the intensity with which you work out and the number of exercises you are supersetting. I would agree that for most beginners looking to add large amounts of muscle, it is not the right approach.

I use free wights for P90x. My girls bro looks similar to that. He worked out while in Iraq, came back and did p90x (doubles version.) You should give it a try.

wrong person, then. wasn't paying attention.

metabolic work can be successfully implemented (think UD 2.0) but thinking you're going to accomplish anything significant is being retardley optimistic. The majority of fatloss is going to come from caloric restriction and cardio (which is why UD 2.0 has you eating 50% of maintenance for most of the week, in addition to cardio), the metabolic work just adds a little bit extra. Supersets aren't going to make or break your progress. Not to mention the fact that the volume and intensity required to make any significant difference will be counterproductive considering that you should be LOWERING volume and intensity when dieiting due to impaired recovery.

Just mix it up. Everyone's body is different and responds differently.

Try a few weeks of 5 workouts, try a few weeks doing 3 workouts. Occasionally i'll beat the hell out of my tris and bi's. Right now I'm doing just very heavy 2 maybe 3 workouts for that group. I do that b/c i'm working them during compounds on that day as well.

For example i'm doing 5x5 for my back today. When I'm done with back i do bi's and will do lighter weights, high reps.

It's all about experimenting and changing the routine.

I do not regularly do direct bi/tri work and it seems to be the trend with a lot of guys I know at the gym. I'd rather focus on compound lifts such as weighted close grip pull ups and dips. Once in a while I will pick up a barbell and do reverse curls after a back workout or CG bench presses.
