I picked up a new road bike today. I had been riding the Trek 1.2 for some time and I got to the point where the bike was just holding me back. So I went down to the LBS near my house and office and picked up a Cannondale SuperSix. Drug it into my office for the day as per the below picture.

I took it out for a very quick ride and could imediately notice the difference when climbing. The Trek 1.3 is noticeably heavier. Granted the Trek is an aluminum frame the the Cannondale is carbon. But it just seems the Cannondale wants to climb; possibly less flex and puts the power down.

I am very much looking forward to the group ride on Saturday. 40 miles of rolling hills with a few good climbs.

Nice bike Scalbert, one of my regular riding buddies had a few SuperSixes over the last few years.

I rewrapped my bars and am patiently waiting on the new Powertap G3 hub to build a new set of wheels around, but it's been a good season so far. Looking forward to the fall and cx season.

damn, thats pretty nice. i got that black Cannondale (2 posts above), but im thinking that i need another bike (or two) now. Road bike to ride to work (15 miles each way) and to join group rides maybe, single speed to run quick errands around the neighborhood and keep the Cannondale so i can ride with my kid

n is the number if bikes you have.
n+1 is the number of bikes you need.

I can see the M in the garage my friend! How is it running? It's funny I was going to revive this thread yesterday. I rode 8 miles indoors on monday then had to stop because I got a mean case of the diarhea the next day. It was wicked. I'm still making a recovery. My bum is still sore. Sorry for the TMI lol

The UCI sure does come up with stupid rules. You can't put traditional brakes behind the fork, but you can do that?!

these are still traditional brakes, but behind an aerodynamic cover. i don't see anything wrong with that.

however, if you look at TdF history, ridiculous decisions and rules were/are made from the day one, so no surprise

+1, starting with banning recumbents in the 30's.

If they want it to be all about the athlete, they should just issue a bike that is standardized. Otherwise, there should be a few basic safety rules and after that, wide open. Speeds and tech would be super advanced if they'd loosen their rules.

For instance, the hour record on a totally aeroed-out upright UCI bike is 56 km and is pretty stagnent. On a recumbent it's 91 & climbing!

They actually did in 1930. Should've kept it this way, but I money talks. TdF is THE biggest advertising campaign for road cycling industry.

Above all, Desgrange conducted a campaign against the sponsors, bicycle factories, which he was sure were undermining the spirit of a Tour de France of individuals. In 1930 he insisted that competitors ride plain yellow bicycles that he would provide, without a maker's name.

Picked this up last week. Trek Madone 4.7. Unfortunately I haven't been able to ride much as there's all kinds of junk on the roads from Irene rolling through.

I have been riding quite a bit this summer. Unfortunately I picked up this three weeks ago:

Out on a group ride and some guy on a tri bike, who no one recognized, tried to ride up the middle of the group. To top it off, he was down in aero while making this move and we were already in a decent pace line doing about 28 MPH. He came together with the guy in front of me. I hit the back wheel and the next thing I noticed was the ground approaching my face quickly. So I covered up and just rolled with it. In essence, I protected my face/helmet with my hands as there was not a scratch on the helmet.

What you cannot see is the additional rash on my forearms, elbows, back and stomach. My bike fared surprisingly well with only a small paint chip and new tape and hoods for the levers. The tri bike did not fare well; a broken fork and frame. The other bike was toast as well.

I'm getting married in less than 3 weeks so I'm really hesitant to go out for a long ride for fear of what was just posted. I'll stick to the trainer for a bit...

I went on a giant (3,000 people) ride last weekend. It was just a bunch of people riding a 25 mile course. Not a race or anything.

Holy shit. The amount of stupid shit I had to dodge was fucking insane. Parts falling off people's bikes, dumbasses stopping in middle of the road to talk on a phone or to scratch their balls, idiots doing zig-zags in front of you, people falling all over the place... Some dude's bottom bracket fell out. It was stupid.

I kinda stuck with a group of younger roadies, because it was way more challenging than groups on pink beach cruisers.

Old dudes on road bikes were the worst. Stupid snarky motherfuckers just could not deal with the fact that someone passed them. They would work extra hard to keep up, one up or just make smart-ass "yeah.... nice bike" comments.

Best part were the people on $5,000+ machines in full on lycra outfits who were not able to keep 17 mile pace.

I think I'm finally ready for a road bike, though.

LOL...I have a late 90's entry-level Cannondale road bike...about $400 when I got it used, maybe $250 now. On "Ride the Rockies" a few years back it was hilarious seeing fat old dudes on $8k bikes. Great fun blowing by them on my POS.

I sure do appreciate them buying the bikes though. Good for the industry, and it makes it easier to shop for used bikes.

Nope, not on the road. I do on the MTB though. It is more of a habit for Tri's; I don't want to waste any time putting on and taking them off in transition. Plus, I alway felt better with them off.

That said, once my hands are completely healed, I will be wearing gloves again. But that is still a couple of weeks off as the knuckles are still pretty raw. Just hope I remain upright on the two rides I have planned this weekend.

It is amazing how so many go out unprepared mechanically, mentally and physically. It someone plans on going out to ride in a group, read up about proper cycling etiquette.

Yep, every Triathlon I do I end up passing numerous $5k+ tri bikes who are struggling. If someone can't maintain a 23+ MPH pace on level ground, perhaps they should work harder on themselves than treating to an elite bike.

It's kind of a wash, as most road gloves don't really have useful padding on the back of the hand anyway. I prefer unpadded, slide-on gloves, just for a little extra grip on humid days, and in case it rains. But they don't really provide much help when you go down.

Glad you came out mostly unscathed, guys in aero position in a group scare the hell out of me, I tend to distance myself from them as quickly as possible. Pity about his frame and especially the innocent guy, just glad you came out okay.
