Formula 1 Grand Prix Du Canada 2014

Well, E90Slam is MIA and we only have a couple of days left until the Canada Grand Prix.
Apologies to him in advance, but I thought it appropriate to create a thread in his
absence even though I know these F1 threads are his thing... so here we go!

Practice starts in just two days with the race occurring on the 8th

Montréal
Race Date: 08 Jun 2014
Circuit Name: Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve
First Grand Prix: 1978
Number of Laps: 70
Circuit Length: 4.361 km
Race Distance: 305.270 km
Lap Record: 1:13.622 - R Barrichello (2004)
Pole position Left-hand side of the track
Fastest lap 1’12.275 (217.22 kph) by Ralf Schumacher, 2004
Maximum speed 309kph (192.004 mph)
DRS zone/s (race) Pit straight and back straight
Distance from grid to turn one 260m

History:
In the 1960s the rivalry between French and English speaking Canada meant that the country's
Grand Prix had two homes: Mosport Park one year and Mont-Tremblant the next.
By 1970, however, Mont-Tremblant was deemed too dangerous and the race moved
full time to Mosport Park.

In 1977 the French Canadians, motivated by the incredible success of Gilles Villeneuve,
decided it was about time they built a race track. Building a new circuit simply wasn't
feasible, however, as time and money were against them. Their solution was simple and effective.
Taking the Ile Notre-Dame, they connected all the island's roads and made a circuit.
The island had been the home of the 1967 World Fair (Expo'67) and was full of futuristic looking buildings.
It was, everyone agreed, a perfect venue for a Grand Prix.

After $2m was spent on upgrading the circuit to Formula One standards, the first race was held
there in October 1978. Gilles Villeneuve, in his first season with Ferrari, was yet to win a
Formula One race, but at his home Grand Prix he took a memorable debut victory.
Following his tragic death in 1982, the track was renamed in his honour.

His son, Jacques, never won at the track but some of the great drivers of the sport have
taken the spoils here. Michael Schumacher holds the record of having won seven times in Canada.
It is also the scene of Jean Alesi's single Grand Prix victory in 1995, driving the number 27 Ferrari,
the same car number which carried Gilles Villeneuve into the hearts of the Canadian Formula One fans.

Are the Renault engines back on track? I guess we'll find out on race day...but they seem confident

Also:
Make sure to watch this race. The circuit's contract ends this year and there's no guarantee that they will be back on the schedule

Thanks 954 Stealth for that beautiful shot of the Senna Corner (my favorite corner) where some of the most exciting racing takes place. I'll be leaving tomorrow with my two old racing buddies for my seat seen there on the left (section 11). Supposed to be a beautiful weekend - for this, my 29th time attending a Formula 1 race. Looking forward to it.

Fantastic! It should be beautiful. I am envious not only of your attending this weekend but also for having gone to an F1 race so many times!
Have a blast and take some photos!!

Stewart-Haas Racing, won a Formula 1 team licence back in April with the FIA announcing that it had 'accepted the candidature of Haas Formula LLC'.

...but they just announced they won't enter a race until 2016

(read the rest here: http://www.fia.com/canadian-grand-prix-preview)

CIRCUIT NOTES

► Asphalt has replaced gravel around the outside of Turns 10 and 13.
► The barrier on the outside of Turn 13 (right of the pit entry), has been moved further back and a new debris fence has been installed.
► New guardrail posts have been added in order to ensure that no spacing is greater than two metres.
► The speed bumps used in 2013 at the exit of Turn Nine and the final chicane will be in place again this year.

DRS ZONES

► There will be two DRS zones in Canada. They share a single detection point, located 110m after T9. The first activation point is 55m before T12, the second 70m after T14.

This was the new "package" for Ferrari in '65 (my first GP). It's the 1.5L flat twelve that replaced the V8 for only the last two races of the season. The following year the formula went to 3.0L making this one of the rarest of Ferrari engines. It's Lorenzo Bandini at the wheel (followed by Dan Gurney in the Brabham).

Thanks for filling in during my absence. I was out of town and travelling abroad. Just got off the flight last night and went straight back to work.

This trip even caused me missed out the Monaco GP.

It is. Beautiful car that made beautiful sounds - just not a winner. And, by the way, Graham Hill handily won that 1965 USGP driving for BRM. We were in awe - still am.

Ferrari needs a 'Version-W', for obvious reasons...
