After market spare kit
Stumbled onto this today, and remember seeing folks discussing purchasing spare tire kit that didn't order it with the car so thought I'd share the link.
Modern Spare $559 for a full spare set including the jack, tools and a tire carrying case. Seems to be much cheaper than ordering from dealer. (but still more expensive then checking the spare tire option box when ordering the car). |

That definitely looks like a great option. Modern Spare accessories seem to be of good quality as mentioned in this thread below.

The same spare tire kit at amazon is cheaper https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BKH8ZQW8/
I reached out to the Modern Spare's support and they said this is because Amazon charges tax while they don't (sounds like a weird reason to charge customers more money ). They also offer optional shipping insurance that can be declined to make the price lower. Other than that the set is exactly the same. If you have the Amazon Prime credit card with 5% cash back, then Amazon purchase may be more cost effective. |

A couple of must-have (IMO) accessories that I pack with my spare are the following:
Wheel hanger pins - (https://www.amazon.com/WHEEL-CONNECT...s%2C177&sr=8-2) These 14mm x 1.25 pins screw into the lug bolt holes in the wheel hub, and make installing the spare a 2-handed task instead of 4-handed. Hang the spare on these pins, install a couple lug bolts, then remove the pins and install the remaining lug bolts. Air Compressor - (https://www.amazon.com/Fanttik-Infla...s%2C244&sr=8-3). I received one of these for father's day. Great for putting a few psi into a tire that develops a slow leak and for correcting the psi if you receive a low pressure warning. |

Sorry about that link -- the correct thread size is M14 x 1.25. Also available are sets of these pins in M12 and M14, in threads 1.25 and M1.5 (8 total pins) if you have other vehicles that also use bolts instead of nuts. I bought the set of 8 since my MB is M14 x 1.5 and my X7 is M14 x 1.25.

From MS: *All options will include a simple shim-type spacer with extended lug bolts to ensure adequate brake clearance. The BMW X7 will have varied brake options that may require the use of the included shim-type spacer. For X7 models with a towing package or M-Sport Brakes, the spacer is used when you have a front tire failure. Simply place the spacer on the hub before the spare wheel and use the included extended lug bolts to secure the spare. |

yes, you can get the factory spare from bmw, the part numbers are in one of the threads. just need to source the jack and the wrench. better solution than the generic spare that modern spare sells

Modern Spare gave me a new wheel. It does come with a smaller spacer which they indicated I did not need but for a just in case. From basic eyeballing and measuring it looks like it will work. I have not actually taken the wheel off to test.

Interesting. They have been selling them for a while for this car. Hopefully no one finds out the hard way it doesn't fit.

rear brakes are actually larger than the front by 3mm. i dont believe they actually tested it on those cars before marketing it.

the 50mph limit is conservative as well, temp spare tires are rated speed M, which is 81mph. as long as its properly inflated, it should be fine. way back years ago on my e90 335i, i got a flat on a friday night out of town. first bmw without a spare, but i had sourced a temp spare. drove on that all weekend, about 350 miles. got the tire swapped on monday morning and drove home 450 miles home on a locally sourced tire. that car had runflats, and if i didnt have the spare i would have been stuck all weekend.

Yea that’s basically what happened to me. I was nervous about ruining the transmission with mismatched tires driving 250 miles, and on top of that, everywhere I looked, the rec was to not drive more than 50-70 miles… I was fine locking the cruise to 50 if that’s what it took to get home. Anyway I got lucky I could borrow another car to get home.

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference 155/80-19 4.9in 14.4in 28.8in 90.4in 701 0.0% 315/35-22 4.3in 15.3in 30.7in 96.4in 657 6.7% 6.7% side to side on the axle with a spare. that gets averaged out with front to rear, which is what you're really worried about. the diff on the axle side to side isnt going to get too upset, its already compensating when you're going in anything but a straight line so the difference is ~3.4% 22 revs per mile. so 5500 rev difference for a 250 miles trip. its the equivalent of 5500 miles of regular driving, the stock setup is off by ~1 rev per mile front to rear. that wont trash the transfer case. a common tire error that people do is keep the same aspect ratio front to rear- 275/40-22 & 315/40-22. thats off by 4.1% or 26 revs per mile. if you figure your average tire life is 20K miles, thats 520K revs over the life of the set. that will do damage.

Well, was giving this some thought. I assume the spacers are needed for the rear fitment only.
If you have this kit AND are in an M50 or M60 AND running a square wheel setup AND have a flat in the rear, you could... Put the spare on the front, and use the OEM front wheel to replace the back. |
