Yakima RailBar System
Using the Yakima fit guide (I have a Showcase 20 cargo box already, so would prefer to use Yakima cross bars) - it shows that the RailBar system is compatible (one L and one XXL).
https://www.yakima.com/railbar Only question I would have is whether there's enough clearance for the the sunroof? I do prefer the low profile bars vs. the factory and other systems but it would be stupid to put these on and not be able to use the sunroof. Has anyone used this RailBar system, or can comment on how much clearence the sunroof needs? Mine is currently in production so can't test or measure. Thanks for any insight. |

I found pictures of the fit on yakima's website:
http://fitlookup.yakima.com?fitid=24472 It looks like the front bar might be forward enough to avoid interference with sun-roof opening and that the back bar might be far enough back. However, doubt you could open it with accessories attached - though I'm fine with that. The fit guide doesn't make mention of it not fitting the sunroof. |

The Yakima Railbars are basically flush with the side rails. I almost went this route, but the Railbars don't play nice with my thule roof box, and is more expensive than the OE bars. The Railbars should cause no issues with overhead height clearance.

FWIW, I ended up getting the Railbar system, some feedback / observations:
1. The sunroof still works - when opening the sunroof can graze the railbar depending on how you install it, however, it does NOT impede or scratch the sunroof (the bars flex quite a bit). 2. I would've preferred some more clearance, but it looks great - I don't really use the sunroof all that much; the black goes well with the M-sport roof rails and I prefer the low-profile to the higher BMW rails in silver or other yakima/thule options + I have a yakima cargo box (showcase 20). 3. It did take a while to get the kit. To fit the X7 - the front bar needs to be a XXL and that bar in black has been on backorder for a while and most retailers (including the Yakima reps I spoke with) were unsure when they would get another shipment. I got lucky and one morning I woke up and Amazon had exactly 1 in stock. Hope this helps. |

Yakima has a fit guide on their website too which will show you what the fit looks like. |

Does anyone know if the BMW crossbars from the G05 X5 are compatible with X7? Are they the same size?

also, when installing, the top cover, was very snug and really had to push it in to fit, but when i watch youtube videos, it seems to be very easy fit. was it just me? also, the plastic "key" thing, pops out so easily and it doesn't open the latch inside to release the top cover. i think i am going to spend some money and buy a set of 4 SKS locks, hopefully they'll fit a little better. |
