Rear Tire Replacement due to Tread Wear

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I went in for an oil change today and the service advisor told me I need to replace the rear tires. They look good to me and this 2023 X7 is only 8 months old. He gave me this document to show the tread wear. What would y’all suggest about waiting a couple months? They’re quoting me $1,157 for retail and installation on two tires.

Are these all season tires? Do you drive them in snow? If yes, then I'd probably drive them for a couple more months, and then would get 4 new tires before the winter season. 4/32 tread is sufficient for summer driving, but not enough for winters.

I’m in Texas and we only get snow for about one week out of the year. These are the all season tires that came from the factory.

How many miles are on the tires?

If your dealer is anything like mine, their measurements are usually 1-2/32" less than actual. What I mean is if they say the tire has 5/32" then it actually has around 6/32" to 7/32" left.

yep, i would get a tread gauge and check for yourself. for some strange reason, the dealer tread gauges always read low when it comes to the service checks and lease turn in checks

Then I'd drive the car until tread goes to 2/32. At that time the fronts will have less tread as well, so you'd want to replace all 4 tires at the same time. This will give you a chance to consider other tire brands that have better tread life.

Yeah wouldn't trust them either. But if it were true and the mileage was less than expected, I would tell them to replace via tread warranty through the manufacturer.

Keep in mind that while 2/32 is legal minimum, many tests have shown the water dispersing capabilities of tires is mostly if not all gone once tires reach 4/32 tread. So at that point if it rains, it can hydroplane very easily.

So in areas prone to rain, it's best to replace once they reach 4/32

This is very true and I 100% agree with you. On the other hand it is pretty frustrating to replace rear tires just to find out that fronts need to be replaced in couple of months. I usually prefer to replace them all together.

But yeah, if hydroplaning is a concern, then the tires need to be replaced once they reach 4/32.

Yes, replacing all 4 at the same time is the way to go.
I've found that on German cars (especially AWD) the front and rear tires wear at almost the same rate even if you don't rotate. Fronts usually only have about 1/32" more tread then rear by the time the rears are worn. So doesn't make sense to make 2 trips to replace tires. Just do all 4 on the same trip.

The OP is in Texas, They've been getting a lot of rain in TX. so once they get to 4/32" they should look into replacing it. The photo shows the dealer saying the tires are at 6/32 and 5/32 f/r I would guess in real life it's actually probably closer to 7/32 and 6/32 so they still have some useful life left.

OP how many miles do you have? If you have 21” square setup maybe you can rotate the fronts and the rears to get a few more months then change them all together down the road?

This is what I’d ask about.

I almost always drive down to wear bar indicators. Just be careful in inclement weather and drive slower…..

i would measure and verify the depth, but my guess would be is that you can go another 5-10K miles before you really hit replacement depth of 4/32 based on how many miles you have on them now.

There are digital tread depth gauges (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) that are easier to read than the cheap plunger type.

That tire doesn't even come in the factory sizes, so it's irrelevant.

Mileage warranties generally don’t apply to OE tires that come on a new car, so I wouldn’t rely on that.

Have you rotated them yet...may not matter and also not sure if I'd run lower tread tires on the front given the chances of hydro planning.

I live in Texas as well, Dallas area. The weather here lately has sucked, plus rain in general pools up on the highways which is nuts. I came from Colorado, so much less rain, but it never really pooled up anywhere.

Hit a patch on the highway last month, and could feel the X7 float a bit before it dispersed the water...was going pretty fast too.

I'd keep running them until you need to replace all 4. Hit up Discount Tire for a checkup in a few months...then buy from them. Much better service, prices, and warranty.

I'm at 12,800 miles now...will need to check mine as well here soon.
