I have to say, I too am bewildered by the "pedestrian safety" element. Is this really a big problem? How many morons are stepping out in front of cars each year? You'd think it would be the lead story on the news at least once a week if it's that bad. If it really is a problem, perhaps the poor helpless pedestrian should stop texting while they cross the street....
Meanwhile (pretending that the legislators really care about safety... tee hee), you can still get in any car totally shitfaced and fire that baby up and take off. How about a car that won't start if you're drunk? That might save a life or two... I just hate to see design elements that have to be based on ridiculous new regulations - like the elephant ears for side mirrors...
