when should I take in to service? confused help

So my vehicle currently has 7,984 miles. I did an oil change around 5k and plan to every 5k. I was planning to do dealer at 10k but now I am getting more messages about oil change.

App and vehicle is saying change in 1,299 miles. I checked oil level and all is good.

Should I just ignore and wait until 10k??

TIA

Did you attempt an oil service indicator reset at 5K (even though no message)?

No. I figured it would be reset at 10k dealer service since that is what bmw suggests and has oils
Minder set at 10k

has it been a year? the cbs is based on mileage OR time.
if its been a year since the car was delivered, bring it in to let them change it even though its early- you dont want your service record to look like you went past the minimum yearly change interval (even though you are changing more frequently on your own)

if you arent tripping the cbs interval by mileage but want to do more frequent changes, i would do it based on time, every 6 months with the yearly done by the dealer.

your service record gets flagged if there's more than a year between oil changes (i know you are changing on your own, but their records are going to show exceeding the oil life) thats not a fight worth having in case you ever have an engine warranty issue.

Mine triggered at 12 months, with less than 3K miles. Did the oil change and reset the indicator. Not sure if you can do a reset if the indicator hasn't triggered.

the 10K is condition based service. its going to count down faster or slower mostly based on fuel consumption.
unless its changed on the g platform, in the past it was X gallons of fuel with modifiers based upon an acidity sensor in the oil and a few other factors that influence the countdown.

the warnings begin to pop up when you get within 1500 miles, they figure thats about a month of driving

I have never looked at the CBS recommendations before. But if I understand you correctly Orient330iNYC, the CBS system is counting down to when the next oil change is needed. So if I have 4100 miles on my odometer and the CBS reads my BMW is due in 4598 miles, that means I should get the oil change around 8698 miles correct? Based on how it reads I interpreted it as I need to take my vehicle for an oil change at 4598 miles on odometer. Which I thought was quite early but 95% of the driving is in city (i.e., a lot of stop and go).

If your odometer is reading 4100 miles and you get a CBS warning that says an oil change is "due AT 4598 miles"...then yes, you are being asked to do an oil change within the next 498 miles.

If your odometer is reading 4100 miles and you get a CBS warning that says an oil change is "due IN 4598 miles"...then you're not due for an oil change until you've driven another 4598 miles.

Due "in" vs due "at" is not the same.

the app has due in miles.
i just had my oil changed at the beginning of aug. the app says due in aug 2024 or 7,997 miles. i currently have 5500 miles (i dont drive alot)

the car is always counting down to miles left to service and the app is the same.

its counting down. as time goes on the 4598 will go to zero. and actually go negative if you go past it.

its not telling you the mileage to bring it in at

On our 2023 X7 40 which was delivered in Sep 2023 we did the 1st Oil Service in March at 6800 miles when the reminder appeared saying due in 1200 miles which would be 8000 total. The second reminder appeared at 13,600 so at another 6800 from the last change we did it again. At this rate we will be able to do 5 Oil Services before 36000 miles when the free maintenance ends.

Curious why you are changing oil every 5k on a new car with synthetic oil? Synthetic oil is good for up to 15k or one year. Why not just let the dealer do it for free yearly? I have always just gone with the recommended service interval on all of my BMWs (and a Range Rover) even with towing a boat and a trailer, driving up to the snow and back, driving cross country, etc. and have had zero issues with any of them and have 50k miles on the current X7. I can see being worried about it on an older engine, but isn't the 5,000 mile oil change thing a relic from the past with non-synthetic oil and/or high mileage engines?

Yes, 5K oil change intervals are probably more frequent than necessary. That's about as much as I drive in a year, so 5K/12 months is my interval. I do my own -- $70 for oil and filter every 5K is a small expense.

I am a 5k guy. Everyone has their preference and that is mine. Oil might handle 10k but can the filter??

With turbos and stuff I’d rather do what I have always done and hope for best. Leaned at an early age oil changes are cheap to repair costs.
