Heated and Cooling Cupholders

Just curious how effective this feature is.

Does the cooling feature keep your drink cold in summer heat?

Does the heating feature keep your coffee warm in the cold winter?

Thanks all!

It helps but I'm a little underwhelmed by this feature.

I'm typically using an insulated cup so hard to tell. From my experience, the heating feature works okay with coffee in a paper cup. Cooling seems so so.

I use the cooling all the time, but with a metal 12oz soda can. It works just "ok". Basically, it keeps the already cold drink from getting warmer, slower. It will not cool a drink from warm very much. One benefit is it does reduce condensation on the drink, if that even matters. I've never used the heating function. Would I get it again? As a standalone option, no, but if it was bundled in a bunch of options, I guess.

I prefer the layout of the charger pad in models without this option. It's positioned front to back (rather than left to right) with a small storage bin to the right. I know this because of a loaner X7 that did not have the heated and cooled cup holders. I found it easier to place my iPhone on the charging pad and remove it.

And I was wondering why were they different on a video.
Thanks for the breaking that puzzle 🧩

I had it on for an entire road trip like 5 hours, standard bottle of water it kept fairly cool. I did notice the cooling function got louder the longer it was on.

@Frenetic

Provided a really good write up on the Peltier element used in the Thermoelectric cup:

"These cup holders are likely cooled and heated thermoelectrically. It's called the Peltier Effect. How it works is one side gets cool or hot depending on the flow or polarity of current."

https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...38;postcount=2

And confirmed in the tech doc

https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=26355222

6.3. Thermoelectric cup holder
With the optional equipment SA 442 a thermoelectric cup holder is used for the first time in a BMW in the G05. This is fitted as usual in front of the selector lever in the center console.

The two cup holders can be operated separately and differently. Depending on the setting, the color of the light changes from blue when cooling to red when heating.

[COLOR="Blue"]A temperature range of approx. 3 °C to 55 °C (37 °F to 131 °F) is achieved by means of a Peltier element. Drinks cannot be actively cooled down or heated up. The function is solely for keeping drinks cold or hot for an extended period

We tested it with a bottle of water room temperature to see how cold it got. On one hour long car ride without touching the bottle it became cool. It never got cold like in LR/RR "ice box". We then did the same with another bottle for the hot setting. It warmed the bottle but never made it hot. I've come to the conclusion that it keeps cold drinks cold longer and hot drinks hot longer... It functions identically to the MB GLS and Audi cup holders. If this was a stand alone option I would not purchase it but bundled in with others then throw it in.

I think we need to do a scientific test with thermometers.

Definitely but I am not buying one just to quell the curiosities of forum members. If someone has then that would be the proper way to go about it.

exactly my point. it's not a freezer or refrigerator. if you want that buy an electric cooler for the trunk or an lr/rr with it built in. done.

Good info as I was considering a possible retrofit. But it sounds like the juice is not worth the squeeze....

It's cheaper to purchase an electric cooler and secured in the trunk. If you want a BMW branded electric cooler they offer one otherwise you can find others for less money or larger ones.

Missing my LX570 with that deep armrest cooler to chill that drink in a 150F desert heat.

FWIW, I've gotten better results by adjusting the second row climate accordingly in the past, the duct work goes right under the front row cup holders. I found this accidentally when I've had a coffee go cold quickly on a summer day while the kids had max a/c blasting in the rear. I have since used it to my advantage on some longer trips without passengers in the rear. I suppose an added benefit would be having them potentially counteract what the second row climate is doing.

Keeps the cold drink from getting warm and the warm drink from getting cold. That's how I look at it.
