Advice: Protecting Doors

Here is the deal:

I live in a townhouse that has a very small 1 car garage. If you pull in perfectly there is enough room to open the doors "slowly and carefully" without hitting the sides.

However, I want to protect my car doors and my garage walls. I am looking for some sort of padded strip to run along the garage wall around door height. Maybe a piece of rubber stripping? Does anyone have any suggestions?

At my friends house, they actually nailed some carpet to the walls. It does the job very well, as the car doors don't scratch against it, and you can cover a larger area of the wall for a lot less money :-)

Carpet is indeed good, or cut up rubber pieces from old tires - the sidewalls make great barriers, as does the tire itself (use it inside out - put the old worn tire against the wall).

I now know what I'm going to do with my runflats when the tread gets too low! Great idea.

I bought some of those plastic things (from the link way above) and was disappointed. They are pretty hard material and I expected them to be softer. It's almost like their purpose is to protect the garage wall not the car door.

The carpet suggestion is a good one. You can even buy some very thin area rug padding to put behind it for extra softnes.

Thanks for the heads up Led, I was just going to order those plastic things. I thought they would have been soft too.

They're very hard like nylon or something. I'd consider the carpet idea. You could probably get remnants practically for free. The best would be short looped carpet like an office would have. Hey - it would add some sound proofing too!

I have four of them that I bought still in their plastic packaging and haven't put any up yet. I still might try it... but might not either. If I do, I'll provide some feedback.

Anyone remember the guy that got these and actually put them on his car? That was too funny!!

No I'm not. I'll have to search for that thread - he even posted pics. Just make sure you don't have to pee before you read it...

I bought some relatively cheap sheets of foam and nailed them to the garage walls. No problems.

Hmm, well I can't say I'm that obsessive, but it's not as daft an idea as I had feared. Thanks for looking it up in the archives, though
