M50i Average MPG/Consumption

Just leaving this here. I know some people are doubting this to be possible and certainly my daily average is more in the 17-19mpg range. But when road-tripping at an average of 71 mph, you can get decent gas mileage out of this engine.

What!!! Did I read that right 25mpg over ~400miles. And if I m not wrong it’s pretty flat road right?

Good to know our V8s are capable of hitting that kind of mpg.

Yes you read that right
25.1mpg at avg. speed of 71mph and for about 400miles. I would actually say it’s not all that flat, the second half through Ohio is flat, the first part from NYC through Pennsylvania has its ups, downs, curves and general lack of infrastructure.

Yeah, I never recorded it but I noticed a drop off in mpg performance as soon as you start to get over 74 mph. 71 mph is a nice sweet spot, if you can show some patience and drive that slowly. LOL. Kidding/not kidding. In Chicago everyone will be flying by you and also, this vehicle feels like it's going forty when you're doing 70. I find myself accidentally doing 95 from time to time. It's so quite and smooth I have a hard time guessing how fast I'm going. I try to keep the assisted driving set at around 78 when there's not much traffic. Really impressive gas mileage though and will probably get me to slow down a bit on my road trips.

Did you actually measure it at the pump? In my experience, the app is optimistic by about 3-5mpg when compared to actual measurements at the pump.

I've had it show 32+ mpg on my 40i when in reality it's closer to 28mpg (when measuring distance traveled divided by # of gallons it took to fill it back up).

I shall do this experiment on the way back

I hope it’s not that way off because I m already at 14mpg per the app. More than financial aspect, it just feels bad if actuals are any lower.

Do an experiment. Fill up your tank, drive a few hundred miles, fille up the tank again, and calculate to see what true mpg is vs what the app says.

I did this last summer on a 5k mile road trip and the app was consistently 3-5 mpg higher than what the pump calculation came out to be.

14 would be nice. I’m hovering around 11.

I also haven’t lost a stoplight race so that may have something to do with it..

I've measured it at the Pump vs the Vehicle Dash and App. Dash and App is identical. At the Pump There's about a .5 gallon difference. I was able to hit 500 miles on a single gas tank going 60-65mph (with the wife, two toddlers and one suit case of clothing). Drove from Central Wisconsin to Central Lower Michigan at night, no traffic, and stopped once for tolls.

I keep a track of filling gas in an app (always do a full tank). I checked the difference between BMW app and full tank to full tank for a month, it was 21.3 mpg and 20.6mpg respectively. So not a very big difference though
