What do you do when you meet a fellow E90'er on the Road ?

What do you do when you meet a fellow E90'er on the Road ?

This is really something that I havent learn, the proper "How to" or "What to" yet, so I figure I post it here to see where it goes.

During my first week of driving, someone scare the living daylight out of me, when she creeped up beside me on the road, gave me a honk.

I turned, and it was a pleasant surprise. A nice looking lady, powered her E90 window, and said, "Nice Car!", "Yours too!", I smiled and replied, for I thought I was going to get lucky that day.

Nahh! I was lucky to just have a bimmer, thats all.

There are times, after that I wanted to reciprocate, by doing the same thing she did, but I held back and thought maybe its too un-manly.

There were times I wanted to prove that Im the boss-on-the-road, but after realizing I have -5 points in the bank, with a 2-yrs wait, I held back, and thank all mighty I wasnt caught.

There is nothing in the owners manual about this subject matter, so figure I let the forum decide whats the best norm, and maybe to some, they may get lucky! who knows!

No, I actually think that the woman whose path I crossed the other day, had she seen me, would have thought I was actually flirting with her.

A tradition dating back to the 1600/2002 era, at least, has been a headlamp flash. Older BMW drivers still do this, but since the yuppies discovered BMWs during the 1980s, fewer and fewer drivers of newer BMWs participate.

I think it goes beyond yuppies - as BMW became more of a mainstream, established product, the Secret Society syndrome has abated. But you are correct, as numbers of cars increased, the sense of community decreased (this of course I am happy about because it means that BMW is selling lots of cars, making healthy profits which will ensure it remains an independent company going forward - and we can always keep flashing ourselves )

i dont usually flash my headlights...
i always thought that was a warning for the oncoming driver that there was a cop waiting for them.

i try to wave but the few people i did wave to looked at me like i was retarded.

I do not do anything... the E90 is a mainstream car and most drivers are not enthusiasts, most are snotty people who like the badge on the hood and gives them more cache. With my Mini Cooper S, a true drivers car and for the enthusiast I always give a pull on the highbeams, 9/10 times it would be recipricated..... oh BTW the mini convertible drivers, never do it, more of a cute convertible, not a enthusiast car if you get what I am saying. So the point is, I will not do it with the E90 unless it is done to me, the majority of drivers just don't care!

I've nodded at many BMW owners, not just E90. The non-E90 folks seem to stare really, really hard and look green with envy and the E90 folks try to keep up with my mad driving skillz.

same feelings here. i used to drive a vw gti and i got the thumbs up all the time but not with the e90.

there's no question that the e90 is a great enthusiasts car but most of the owners are not enthusiasts..if that makes any sense.

I haven't seen a single asshat driving an E90 that would even look in my direction.

Got to agree with mapezzul. It's just too mainstream a car. With my MX-5 (Miata) I give/get waves from people in other early mk1s, but not from anyone driving one of the later shape - they just became too common.

My other car (for the next two weeks, until my E90 arrives) is a Peugeot 306 Rallye and they are rather rare. I've seen around 15 over the last four years. Almost all owners of those cars (and the 306 GTi-6, which is more common) are enthusiasts. Sadly I don't think this 'instant-hit community spirit' will continue once I start to drive the E90. A good thing then that the enthusiasts can be found at places like this.

Anyway, I would expect that I won't be able to help myself and will try and make eye contact with all E90 and other BMW drivers. I shall see what happens.

Jon.

I dont believe you guys, this car just came out and it aint 2006 yet, and you're saying E90s are mainstream

The general E-series is mainstream, Yeah!
but not yet the E90s, maybe next year or so, this E90 will be really plentiful.

When you live in a city that has some model of BMW every 10th car you see, giving them thumbs up would get old fast. Most are not enthusiasts as you will find on these boards. I did however pull up to a stoplight next to a new E91 wagon over the weekend and talked to the guy briefly.....nice car. If I'm in the Porsche then yes I would flash lights or wave.

I would vote for #1, but I don't high-beam people, just give a nod or thumbs up!

So far, only one guy in a silver e90 325i that tried to break his neck to look at my car without *looking* if you know what I mean. He had shades on and couldn't be bothered with giving me a nod.

The other e90's I have seen with drivers in it were all ladies in 325i's. None of them saw me(or cared).
