Likely will cancel my 3xx order due to rattle reports
This is getting crazy - and I know this might get some negative respose. I also know there are a bunch of folks here that do NOT have rattles in their car but I have now counted over 30 reports of rattles in the interior of brand new e90's here on the e90post website. A large majority of these have not been fixed by the dealership, or subsequent rattles have appeared later...
I spoke with a tech at my BMW dealership who gave me the standard "you can find anything on the internet if you look long enough" story. But these reports are a firestorm and I won't have ANOTHER car in the shop for dash and interior noises. People here aren't reporting trouble with the trunk latch or headlamp trouble - it's always interior noises. This is the common theme with these cars. If I take delivery of my new 3xx and i hear a peep, I might need to be institutionalized. ...now, will I use my deposit for a different car such as an x5 or 530i? I don't know yet.

Never ridden in an X5 or 5 series that didn't have a rattle or two ... never ridden in *any* car that didn't have a few rattles.
You pound any car over potholes long enough, I gAAARontee it'll rattle. Turn the radio up? Oh wait, you must be single ... sorry, I forget guys who aren't married can't tune stuff out (my lame attempt at humor). |

No rattle here either. I had a shimmy for a week but it went away. Maybe im a lucky one.. (knock on wood)
Sorry to hear about it though. Its probably super annoying, cause no matter how much to try to ignore it, you'll hear it cause you know its there.

I knew someone would be a funny-guy. Anyway, I didn't have rattles in my A4, but I do have plenty in my 04 accord and my wife's 05 Lexus RX330 rattles like a can. I had no rattles in my 01 BMW 528i.
I am a little obsessive but I THINK MOST PEOPLE ARE MISSING MY POINT: These rattles seem to be a big creaking and cracking around the radio and by the windscreen. Not just little ticks from the plastic when it's cold. I remember one guy had his car in for 3 weeks. I drove a demo when I ordered mine and it had a major plastic cracking sound coming from an odd-place: the rear windshield and I figured it was a fluke - but my wife thought it was major and I agreed. The salesman said that it needed to go into their shop for an adjustment. Quote:

30 reports, out of how many cars sold - 10,000? Of course not all 10,000 drivers are on here, but still there's over 5,000 members on this forum. Anyways, problems almost always seem exaggerated on forums because of course people post about creaks... people aren't going to post how their car has no creaks for no reason. Anyways, I hope you don't miss out on a splendid car because of some posts you read on a forum.

Hypothetically, lets say all the rattles came from September cars sold in the US. 30 rattles out of the 8693* 3 series sold in the US in September would mean only 0.3% of the cars have had problems. If we added up all the e90 sales on all countries over the past year and factored in all known rattles, I bet fewer than 0.3% of cars have had the problem. I do feel badly for those with the problem. When it happens to you no numbers can make you feel any better. But I wouldn't cancel an order because you are afraid of getting one of the 0.3% of cars with a rattle. If you get a rattle I would immediately go out and play the lottery... you may be in a streak of beating tough odds. * http://www.autoweek.com/news.cms?newsId=103444 |

who gives a rats ass about rattles? we are driving 3 series here...not bentleys. I think people are beginning to expect a little too much for what they are actually paying for.
And besides...i have never ridden in a car that doesnt have rattles sooner or later. My dads porsche had rattles in it 3 weeks after we got it, and every japanese car ive had eventually had rattles. All you have to do is turn up the music. |

I have a solution for preventing rattles...
leave it in the garage! But seriously, if you're that sensitive to rattles, you should not get sports package. And you should move to an area where the roads are as smooth as glass.

I test drove a 550i Thursday and guess what? Rattle from somewhere in the steering column. I could tell it was kind of embarassing for the salesperson. My e46 M3 had some rattle issues, but the dealership was always willing and able to fix them. My wife's RX339 has had some minor rattle issues. I do admit, though, that it drives me crazy when the rattles appear.
