On my X7 screen, among all of the small symbols at the top margin of the screen, is a small white box with a number in it. The number often changes. What is that??

That's the automatic help function at work. Some functions that you have accessed for the first time there are automated help instructions for you. The instructions will appear if you click on the enclosed number.

I believe you are referring to (the annoying) messages function.

Tap the number, read or delete them to make the number notification go away. Or do what I do- live in CarPlay all the time so you don’t have to see any of the BMW UI at all.

That is the notifications.

Press it and the car will tell you various things about activating valet, missed calls, etc.

Oh, by the way, you can turn off all of the "help" functions in settings.
