To honest, I find the entire "break-in" worries comical. After owning so many cars, I've never worried about it. And with the M50i, there is so much power and acceleration for a "family SUV" that I rarely if ever go above 3000 rpm just driving around town or even getting on the highway.
We didn't buy an M3 or M5, so if any of us are itching to hammer our X7's, maybe we bought the wrong vehicle.
My advice, just drive the thing like you actually care about it and you will be fine. If you drive it like a rental car, again, maybe you got the wrong vehicle.

I pretty much thought the same. Thoughts on getting an early oil change?

Well there’s a difference between use and abuse. I use my cars as they are intended but I do not abuse them. I would argue if you bought an m50i and you rarely if ever take it over 3k rpm perhaps YOU bought the wrong car. Could have saved a lot of dough and bought a very adequate 40i and drive like most women. Nothing wrong with that. To say you people who bought a high performance expensive luxury suv and want to do what is capable of doing is wrong? Well that’s ridiculous.

As far as break in? Not much needed but I usually go a little easy first 500 miles. No hard launches. I do keep the rpms light probably around 3500 ish max. No extended cruise control or steady speed and no hard breaking. After 500 she’s ready. Have fun.

I would say there is no difference between all three in how hard you can drive them and your expectations of performance of each platform on the streets. . I absolutely flog the crap out of my X7M50i as much as I do my M2 Comp and both seem to ask for more when I am done. The X7M50i is a beast and fully capable (with DHP) to thrill you if you let it. It will embarrass many traditional sports cars. I learned my lesson years ago when a X5M walked away from my 911 on the highway. Todays X7M50i is faster than that X5M was.

There's what the manual says about it. That's all that's required.

Now, I went a step further, as I do extra in an attempt to set up my cars for long-term ownership. I believe if you take care of your cars, they take care of you.

So for the first 1,200 miles, I also used continuously varying RPM's and speeds. Absolutely no cruise control.

Then at 1,200 miles, I followed what BMW does for true M vehicles (which the M50i is not) and did an additional discretionary oil and filter change, and change rear differential fluid. This is not required, and not included in BMW service, so I had to pay for it.

Was this extra required? No. Will it result in more long-term smooth vehicle operation down the road? Unknown, but I hope so. Certainly can't hurt, and absolute worst case, I'm out the cost of the 1,200 mile changes and patience up to that point. A price I'm willing to pay.

Well there is an argument to be made that maybe I did buy the wrong vehicle, as I've done that many times before.
But its perfectly acceptable to have the power there if you want it or need it, but not abuse it the vehicle.
And as for driving like a woman, well perhaps more like an old man. As I have the driving record in which I have already experienced too many close calls and interactions with the police resulting in some pretty expensive insurance rates in my much younger years. But that doesn't change anything about any break in period.
And since we all have the freedom to use our right foot as we please, I have no issue with any M50i owner driving as they see fit. Even if they are a woman.

Not to mention how trivial and cheap a fluid change is in the grand scheme of how expensive these vehicles are, especially if you are buying them outright and keeping it long term.

if you bought the m50i and you're not, er, "hammering on it" occasionally, you're leaving a lot of fun on the table

I picked my M50i up from the east coast and drove it back to CO. I started pushing her at 1,200 and then hard at 1,500. Oh, the fun we had!

This right here 👍

The m50i is such a fantastic car to drive. I mean I have it almost a year and it still amazes me. Smooth no drama power delivery and dam if this thing don’t line to cruise at 90+. She just ain’t happy other wise lol.
