Hit & Run - A few questions

Hi All,

Today, I parked my car on a side street in Bucktown/ Chicago to stop by a friend's house. After an hour, I found that somebody had crashed my car. Basically, there is a big ding on the hood - I believe an SUV with a trailer extension had hit the hood trying to park and ran away.

My questions:

1. Do you think I need a police report?
2. I also have a few dings at the rear bumper which I have been ignoring for a while. Can I combine these 2 separate accidents when I file a claim to avoid duplicate deductibles? Is it legal/ reasonable?
3. Is there a risk for my insurance company to deny hit & run? Any suggestions to avoid it?

Thanks guys,

Ucan

Just call your insurance company say it was parked and what you believe may have happened. You do not need a police report and should not have to pay a deductible since it is not your fault, at least that's how it works with my agent. Really this is a minor issue and should cause no issues with you and your insurance, ie your rates shouldn't increase either unless this becomes some regular situation. I've had this kind of thing happen a few times in the past including recently and never had any issue with my insurance company. If you do, I would look at changing insurance after this gets fixed.

In Illinois, all accidents need to be reported to the police. Take the time and walk into your local district and make out a hit and run report.

A non-reportable incident would usually be covered under your comp. vs. a reported "accident" type incident is usually covered under collision and people generally carry different deductibles for each - figure out which works better for you. If you have a good agent, they can help you there.
