Today was the day I was to take our X7 to the dealership for a software update but BMW has not yet released a new update. The shop now says it will be available the middle of August. CarPlay is working perfectly for me since installing iOS 13 (Public Beta) so I'll check with them again the end of August for any available update.

I don't know if this is helpful for anyone but..
If you want to ensure your music starts playing in your car when CarPlay connects you can set an automation in Shortcuts app. It has been working flawlessly for me for the last two days. You can set playlists and album. I have only tried with Apple Music app. I like that music starts playing. |

So I actually just lost this. You have to have iOS 13, but don't upgrade to beta 5 because they took out this tab. Its an automation you can search for.
Sorry about that. It does work you just have to have iOS 13 beta. I'm surprised they took it out in 5. Apparently that's temporary. |

I just downloaded iOS 13 public beta 4 and tested CarPlay. Apple added a new popup garage door option to Dashboard if your door openers support HomeKit. I have LiftMaster garage door openers that are HomeKit enabled. After I pulled out of the garage I tapped the button to close the door. After I drove away from our house the option disappeared. When I returned home the option reappeared so I could tap it to open the door. Very smart of Apple to integrate HomeKit into CarPlay in this way. And my connection issues are gone with iOS 13, this must be an iPhone issue because the BMW updates didn't resolve it (at least for me).
I few more features of CarPlay Apple added: 1. You can now tap the map on the Dashboard to view Apple Maps in full-screen mode. 2. You can now swipe between the Dashboard and the standard app views. 3. There is a new option in Settings to enable or disable album artwork (don't know why anyone would turn it off but there it is). Sorry about the slightly out-of-focus photo... Last edited by LittleJoe; 07-30-2019 at 06:13 PM.. |

Clifs Notes between the lines synopsis: “We are ill equipped to keep car play working smoothly, we need to hire some bodies.” Not sure when this is effective and for whom |

That is a good article but one thing they didn't mention is that BMW doesn't support Android Auto and I would guess there are many more owners with Android phones that have no option of connecting their phone to iDrive. So in my view BMW reconciled this by charging owners who have iPhones and want to use CarPlay a subscription. I know they could have baked the cost into the car for everyone but is that fare to Android users? I generally keep a car 3 years so for me the $80 subscription for years 2 and 3 is no big deal. After all, our X7 sticker'd for $106K so what's another $160. The biggest win to me as that I finally have wireless CarPlay and can do things in this car I could never do before in any other car.

I have the beta as well. Connecting has been better for sure. When I try and control the music in the hud it sometimes doesn't work now. Especially in recently played playlist. The title is different than the song it starts playing. Maybe like it isn't updating? Ever get that?

Here we go again....
As soon as I announce that CarPlay is working flawlessly another problem has come up: My iPhone is taking about 90 seconds to connect every time I enter and start the car. Anyone else? Just started having this problem after weeks of solid performance. It’s a crazy amount of time to wait before being able to use navigation. I’m running the most up to date version of iOS 13. |
