Not sure if this has been posted yet, but here are some shots of X7 xDrive40i M Sport with factory running boards ($400) and extended shadowline - looks nicely integrated.

Love the look. Love the price. Hate that you can't step out over them.

I don't think the X7 needs side steps. It isn't a particularly tall vehicle and the size of the steps do not look that functional going on photos alone. They did a great job integrating them and focused on fashion but it may have impacted function.
Secondly, having had retractable ones and static steps on various vehicles I have learned that static steps are great for ruining your suit pants along with collecting snow, salt, dirt and tar on them. I would not consider this option or recommend it based on my experience in the past with other vehicles and static steps. If retractable/hidden steps were available and your family is from Lilliput then I would suggest that for the X7 otherwise skip all around. YMMV.

I had running boards on my previous MB GLS and they helped my daughter get in and out of the vehicle. She struggles with the x7.

I have no issue with mine, I just step on them to get out of the car... It doesn't feel awkward to me I'm not making any crazy adjustments to do so

In my opinion, if you have young kids they are very necessary. I am really glad that I have them, and would have regretted if I didn't.
I don't wear suit pants though. |

This.... Before I test drove the X7 I remember reading the comments/concerns about the running boards hitting the side of your pants/leg when getting out, etc. My curiosity got the best of me, so I messed around with getting in/out of the X7 with running boards using different techniques (dealer probably thought I was a bit nuts ). I ended up using a similar technique that I use to get in/out of my (bigger & slightly lifted) Ford Expedition. Getting in/out, I grabbed the "oh shit" handle above the door for some extra leverage and then put one foot on the running board to get in/out - which didn't seem too awkward. This technique (or something similar) also serves to save the extra wear/tear on your seat side bolster (from sliding across them), especially when getting out of the X7.

I said it in another thread as well, but my biggest reason for getting the running boards was to not have the kids stepping on the body-colored rocker panel cover that would be there otherwise (even still with an aftermarket solution). This was a plastic piece on the X5 we had previously so it wasn't horrible, but seeing anyone step on paint intentionally and routinely would have not done well for my blood pressure.

Looks cool.
What is the little black square behind the front wheel arch? A light? Are these available as a dealer installed BMW accessory? How much for side steps + install? |

You can have them ordered as a costly retrofit. The footboard comes primed ready to paint. There's also additional parts that will be required if you currently have a M Sport, like new footboard support, sills, sill inserts, and miscellaneous screws and bolts.

Nice find. Those part numbers have been somewhat elusive on the net (at least all together) as they have not been populated in RealOEM.com yet - which is usually a good source for DIY part searches. My previous net searches have been very hit or miss...

Unfortunately not at this time. BMWNA usually tweaks options and packaging over the course of the year - until then it's cha-ching retrofit.

Yeah, me too. Bimmercat is a new one for me though. Yet another one to add to my list... Bimmercat also seems to be more comprehensive than RealOEM as well (at least they appear to get new parts info ahead of RealOEM).

Jet Black Running Boards for Free with Trade
I have a new 2020 X7 Jet Black and I did not want the running boards and would like to trade someone without running boards that wants these. I need side panels from a non-running board Jet Black X7. If interest please contact me. I am in the Orlando area so we would need to coordinate.

Retrofit sounds expensive. Wouldn't normally spec running boards but I think they'll be helpful for our small kids getting in and out without scuffing up the sill. |
