Different Carplay apps via Programmable Buttons
Not sure if this will help anyone else but I recently discovered there are different Carplay access points you can program with the 1-8 buttons.
I setup Carplay as button 1 and was annoyed that every time I clicked it the radio would shut off and start playing music from my phone. (which is a random song if you had the music app closed). A lot of times I use Waze or Apple maps but want to listen to the radio so it was annoying to keep having the radio interrupted. My issue was that I had set up my programmed button through the media page to access Carplay so it would always bring up the music app and start playing. If you go to the Com page and select Carplay it will bring up the phone page in Carplay. If you go to the BMW Map page (top right of idrive wheel) and select Carplay it will bring you to the maps page of Carplay. For both of these last two options the radio playback is not interrupted which is nice. I switched my button 1 to the map access point for Carplay and prefer that over the media one which had autoplay. Crazy how complicated this car can be ever for us that are pretty tech savvy. |

I’ve been configured this way since August, “Maps In CarPlay” set to Button #3 is so much easier than hitting Home and then that small CarPlay touch button on the top of the iDrive screen.

Click "NAV" on the shifter console then turn iDrive knob wheel controller until the focus (red box) is atop "Maps In CarPlay". Then press and hold one of the 1-8 buttons. You can then hit "COM" on the shifter and do the same thing for "Phone in CarPlay". And the same for "MEDIA" on the shifter console and "Music in CarPlay" The key to the whole thing is to USE THE iDRIVE KNOB WHEEL CONTROLLER to put the focus (red box) where it belongs and not the touchscreen. By making three of the 1-8 shortcut buttons into these CarPlay shortcuts it eliminates the need to tap through a bunch of menus to get to Maps, Phone, and Music. It will also remember the last Map you used, so if you use Google Maps tapping the 1-8 shortcut will take you right to Google Maps. |
