M2 Weight Predictions
Anyone have a feel for what kind of weight we can expect for the M2? One thing that disappointed me about the M235i was how hefty it was - roughly the same as an e92 M3 despite being significantly smaller dimensionally. Think BMW can really shed some pounds with this model or is that asking too much?

I don't have an estimate though, anything that comes out now is pretty much pure speculation regarding weight. |

You have to be somewhat realistic here. How is a 6 pot going to be lighter than a 4 pot? The numbers just don't add up. An e36 M3 was not lighter than a 318i. Nor was an e46 M3 lighter than a 320i.
Personally, I think it's so cliche to say M is for marketing. While I'm not in a hurry to dump my e92 for a newer supposedly better M3/4, I'll gladly admit that there are things they've made giant improvements on. So IMHO, M is well and alive. I know we've talked about this in the past, but I still really think you should test drive an M235i. I know you'll think it's a fat bastard, but at the same time, that's going to be the basis of an M2. If you really hate it that bad, you might as well cross the M2 off your list. It's not like the e30 M3 is going to be a starting point for the M2, my 2 cents. |

Yeah. I must admit, I think you are going to be disappointed if you expect 200 pounds less than a 228i. Maybe 200 pound less than an M235i...even that seems generous, though I wish it were true.

Hell, you are asking for a bigger car than my e36, with turbo and associated hardware to be lighter vs an NA I6 to be lighter than it. How? I honestly you are wasting your time and should prob look ar Cayman's instead. I'm a fan of them, but they are out of my budget. But then again we are comparing a much smaller car with only 2 seats too |

You know Alfa 4C V2 is in the works with more powerful engine and will compete directly with Cayman, RS3 and M2. When I think of M2 the first thing that comes to mi mind is 4C. |

You completely lost me when you said the 4C directly competes against the M2. What do they have in common? One was built from ground up as a sports car with a carbon tub (2er wasn't), is a 2 seater (M2 won't be), starts at $70k (M2 won't be). It really sounds like you are looking at the Boxster/Cayman, Lotus Elise/Exige and 4C category. The M2 simply just cannot match those cars in that regard, nor was it supposed to |

And at $60k base, BMW can expect to sell next to none!
I'd go for a stripper M3 or start looking at the Cayman. At least the markup would get you a mid engined, lighter car with an inline 6 screaming behind your ears! As for weight, I'm guessing just below the M235. Anything more significant would be way too expensive and dangerous by way of canibalizing sales away from the M3. |

As much as I look forward to the M2, I will look elsewhere if the base price isn't around $53K. Always wanted a Cayman/Boxster so if the M2 is too expensive, I'm going to jump ships. There is nothing that BMW makes right now that interests me, not even the M3 or M4 (too big).

Buy used. That's what I would do. I drool every time I see a Cayman so I like it too. However, I am a fan of the M235i so I look forward to the M2. My plan is to hop into one next year or the following year. If it is too much I will look elsewhere (cadillac, mb, audi, etc.). There is plenty of competition to check out. Hopefully BMW realizes this. I have been a fan of BMW for about 20 years and I am not happy with most of the cars they've been pumping out.

An M4 is 80 lbs lighter than a 435i - If that's the case I would be really surprised to see the m2 under 3400 lbs.

With my next car, I want to go a different route. 1) I'd like to buy new so that I can order it exactly the way I want. Kind of a once in a lifetime thing. By ordering new, I'll have a full warranty and get to do something like ED or PCD. 2) Car has to be betweem $45 to 55k Having said that, it's not a hard requirement. A used Cayman S is definitely possible. Hell turboing my e36 M3 is also not out of the question either. Really, the only thing that could go wrong for the M2 (for me anyway ) is the price. I already like the M235i, so the M2 should be great for me |

Having said that, it won't be slower than the m235 But if you want one they will make you pay for it. The m235s were hard to get already with low allocations, imagine a full M car at launch |

Shouldn't be a problem getting one at ED MSRP considering the M3/M4 guys were getting that. Assuming its not limited production like the 1M.
