X7 Trunk Space

So lately I've been contemplating trading in my G05 X5 for an X7, primarily for trunk space purposes.

However, upon research, it doesn't sound like the X7 has that much more cargo space (assuming 3rd row is folded down).

Can any of you provide some insight for me?

I've got rear facing baby seats in the 2nd row, so the 2nd row can't really be pushed forward too much (if at all).

My guess is no. The X7 and X5 are relatively close in most exterior measurements with the exception of length, where the X7 is about 10 inches longer. So to me, it makes sense that that is the only measurement in the cargo area that is meaningfully different.

I've had X5s as loaners before. Just by "feel," the X7's cargo area felt noticeably larger but it was not a crazy difference.

In lieu of guesses and conjecture here's an actual measurement I just did.

Second row is all the way back and reclined quite a bit.

Did that trade as we take long family road trips for weeks at a time. The X7 trunk is significantly larger than the X5. It’s also taller/higher in the back. I have done a lot of real world testing and the difference between the X5 vs the X7 is a lot. I now don’t have to worry about my family of 4 in packing. I have so much more room now in the X7 that getting extra luggage to fit is a non issue. Better yet bringing items home from a long road trim is a non concern where I would have to mail them back in the X5 as every cubic inch was precious. To top that off, my second row passengers have reclining captains chairs with rear entertainment touch screens where they had fixed upright bench seats in the G05 X5. The X7 is a completely different animal.

I will show some examples of two of our very large trip suitcases that just will fit in the G05 X5 luggage area with no room to spare. I literally can fit twice as many in the X7. I also have access to the under floor without moving the luggage.

The height is so tall in the X7, I can stand up the suitcases.

I can even take a extra passenger with their luggage and still have extra room for more soft bags.

Yea its not any wider then the X7 its just longer, which is what we needed and why we are buying one. Although we are keeping our X5 as well for now.

Wow, would you be able to give me the dimensions of those suitcases? That would help me a lot to visualize the space. Thanks!

Standing upright counting the wheels is 31 inches high. 22” wide and 13.75” thick. They are big bulky hard cases.

I can actually fit 4 of these in now and a few soft bags before I have to pile on top of the luggage leaving me a unobstructed view out my rearview window. I will never need 4 but was shocked it could be done.

Thanks so much for the info! I've got a growing family of 4 as well, and it's those road trips that really push the cargo space of an X5 to its limits. Would love to not worry about it anymore lol

What irritated me the most with the X5 was the bench seat that would not recline. It didn’t offer any options for second row comfort for my kids. I could make my G05 X5 work on these long road trips but I had to creatively pack and count every square inch. Then when I wanted to get my detailing products under the floor for touch ups, I had to remove all my luggage in the hotel parking lot. I then started to stuff soft crap my kids bought at Disney under the rear floor to the point on out return trip, my X5 was packed from top to bottom not being able to see out the rear window. This was even after mailing a lot of souvenirs home.

Pic of my last X5 at the Grand Floridian at Disney. Always the cleanest rig in the parking lot for the entire two week stay. I loved that vehicle on these trips but I know I am going to love my X7M50i this year a whole lot more.

As reference, seeing as you're in Canada, I can fit my hockey stick diagonally in the back with the 3rd row folded, and its a 62" twig.

I had the G05 and now have G07 - the difference is noticeable both second row comfort and size of cargo space. If in doubt, go G07. Good luck.

You may want to consider a roof box too.

Something else to keep in mind is the grandparents.

You'd be surprised how useful it is to have a 3rd Row so all 6 of you can climb in and take a lazy summer drive to get ice cream, or not have to take 2 cars to the crowded grade school parking lot for the dance recital. Your kids will have friends and playdates, very much comes in handy carpooling too. X7 is a terrific minivan replacement, though uncool to discuss publicly.

While on the subject, for overnight trips you'll need a cargo box on the roof for any BMW SUV you wind up buying so long as you're in the car seat and stroller phase. Doesn't matter if it's X5 or X7.

Point is, the best thing about the X7 is the 2 extra seats that just pop up out of nowhere when you need them most, and they are very comfortable and downright spacious for kids and adults too. Our grandparents rave about them. Decide between the X5 and X7 based on the 2 extra rear seats, not the interior cargo area.
